1998 C70 Coupe Winter Driving (Canada) C70 1998

I am getting pretty close to making a decision to purchase a 1998 C70 Coupe with approximately 70,000km at USD$22,000.

I live in Canada and have the requirement to drive through pretty harsh winter conditions. I have been advised by the dealer that I will need to purchase winter tires. From your experiences in the winter, will the winter tires and the fwd give me all the needed power to get through some very harsh Canadian winters? What other things should I consider concerning winter driving and the C70?

On another note, I guess I am trying to ascertain what the reliability will be like for this car in general. For the most part, people on this bbs seem very positive on the C70 and believe that it will have a long life. What should I expect as my annual upkeep costs? The dealer is also thinking I could purchase the extended warranty for about $3,000 for three years (private deal).

I look forward to your insight and perspective.

Best regards.

I have a '98 V70 automatic n/a. I've had it for 2 winters now and I live in Northern Ontario (lotsa salt on the roads!). Last winter I was driving on some Yokohamas all seasons and they were crappy. This winter I bought Kuhmo studless winter tires (we can't use studs in ON >:-( ) and glad I did. We had a lot of snow this winter, ask my snowblower. These tires made a huge difference and I also went on a 3200km trip between Boxing Day and New Year's eve. If an intersection is really slick, I'll use the winter mode on the tranny to get going. C70 comes with high pressure turbo doesn't it? If that's the case, you'll want winter tires to hook up that power.

    Hiya K,

I'm a New Yorker who was lucky enough to play
junior in the WHL around 1980. So i'm very
familiar with the Winnepeg to Vancouver haul.

I would highly recommend buying the Bidgestone
Blizzak snow tires. I bought mine 3 years ago
from Tirerack.com and had them mounted on Mille Meglia
16 " mags. Don't go higher then 16's cause it will help
clearence. You save a lot of wear and tear on your summer
mags and tires. Every winter I see beamers and MB's floundering
on ice and snow while I chug along like a tank.

As far as the extended warranty, I would probably decline as
big repairs would have probably happened already. $ 3000. is
a lot of money! Just have the car checked out well.

It seems to me that you already have much of the information at your fingertips to decide whether or not to purchase snow tires.

How much snow accumulation do you get in Winterpeg?
Are you able to avoid driving when you experience significant snowfalls? i.e are you retired?
    What is your driving style?
What grade of tires are on your car now? performance tires? All season tires?
What is your tolerance for the loss of traction experienced by using summer or all season tires vs true snow tires?
Oh, and finally, do you want to expose your alloy wheels to the ravages of winter?

I drive an all wheel drive Volvo, but I would not even think of driving it in winter without the aid of 4 snow tires. For three seasons, my car is equipped with low profile, wide footprint, performance tires. Entirely the wrong tire for winter driving.
