Defective gas tanks in v70 awd? V70-XC70 1998

Hi folks-
I talked to an owner of a 98 v70 awd R earlier this week and he said that he had had FIVE gas tanks installed in his car. He said that because the awd v70's (NOT just awd R) were lower to the ground than the regular v70's and Cross Country's, they had specially made gas tanks that were made by a different supplier. He said that he'd was on his 5th gas tank in 35K miles. (The tanks all leaked gas.)

Is this common in 98 awd and awd R's? (as opposed to cross countrys, fwd cars) Is it common in 99's?

would like to get an awd R and so my inquiring mind wants to know.

thanks!
Dan

Defective gas tanks in v70 awd? V70-XC70 1998

I own a '98 V70AWD and had to replace the gasoline expansion tank when the car was about one year old. After a fill up it leaked on my garage floor. It spent a week at the dealer waiting for parts. The explanation for the failure was a bad batch of tanks and failure at the nipple that the expansion hose attaches to. This IS a known problem on this model, though not wide spread. Of note, I had been posting messages similar to yours at that time since I had read of others with fuel leaks and lo and behold, one day I get phone call from a NHTSA worker! They had been monitoring the Brickboard and alt.autos.volvo and were VERY interested in my problem. They wanted the failed part (no way says Volvo) and were considering a forced recall on the tank. This never happened to my knowledge. Since my repair, no more leaks!

Being in the business (Volvo dealer), I've never heard of one V70 gas tank leaking yet. If it's happened to anyone, it certainly can't be common and I'd question that story as it just doesn't sound reasonable.
There'd be other reasons why I'd seriously question buying any AWD Volvo compared to 2WD (discussed here often) but the gas tank isn't one of them.
If in doubt, fill the tank and have it checked at another shop as it'll either be leaking or it won't.
