veeeery tempting... AWD Swap on C70 C70 1999

Maybe I should actually get the car in my hands before I start drooling over this... it should be here next week. I chatted w/ a guy who has a fire-damaged cross country who said he'd take $3500 for the whole car from the A pillars back. Transaxle, rear end, computer, suspension, etc etc. There aren't any AWD manual transmissions out there, are there? Oh well, I'm obviously still pipe-dreaming.

veeeery tempting... AWD Swap on C70...............NOT!!!! C70 1999

I've heard that there are people who can convert any car to AWD BUT it'll cost you between $35K-$100K for such a conversion and why? If you want AWD, buy a car, SUV, or PU that's already got AWD/4WD from the factory.

Besides, you do know that the same car (say a V70 for example) loses power with AWD compared to 2WD don't you? Hardly worthwhile IMHO. Volvos (now older type) AWD system is not exactly known to be a good, bullit proof system and in XC, often keep their owns bank accounts busy (empty).

Add another 0 to your price and that might be in the ball park to do a conversion on your C70. I don't know if you're the same guy that started a thread like this a while back. Try looking that one up, it should pretty much answer all your questions (unless you were that guy then you already know the answer.)

There are AWD manual transmissions out there, from 97 AWD wagons. Lots of those up here in Canada. However, if you're looking for a performance edge, you are barking up the wrong tree. Volvo AWD systems (so far) are not designed to enhance performance, but rather to improve safety. 99.9% of the time, power is split 95/05 front and rear. What you end up with is a car that is slower, and with poorer handling than its FWD equivalent.

I've driven both versions of the S60 (as well as both versions of the new Passat) and found that the extra weight, combined with the added ride hight mandated by the AWD system, made the car sloppier durring quick transitions.
