Intermittent Stalling 850 1994

Our 1994 850 wagon has 113K mile on and over the past several months has stalled without warning. Usually the stalling is at very low speeds or at idle. The car will run for hours on the highway. The when restarted may stall while driving down the road or stall when first driven in the morning. The car has been looked at by our Volvo mechanic several times but the problem is can not be replicated on demand.

I have read past threads and it may be:

1. The battery

2. The fuel pump relay

3. Spark plug wires (these were checked)

3.A wire to the fuel pump in the back of the car.

I almost bought a battery today, but I need more info because now I am thinking new fuel pump relay. Any help/comments are appreciated!

    Intermittent Stalling 850 1994

i had the same problem about 3 weeks ago in my 94 850 w/ 108k on it. I cleaned my k&n and the problem stopped. it was very muddy from a few nasty snow storms we had here so i think when the car was not in motion not enough air was able to pass through it. When you figure out whats causing it in your car please post your fix in case my problem going away was only dumb luck

Here is what I have done for this problem:

      1. Checked the battery. As it turned out it was the original from Manufacture in Dec 1993. It was not holding a full charge.

      2. Replaced the fuel filter, It had at least 50K on it.

      3. Replaced the fuel pump relay switch.

I believe the problem was caused by the battery, the fuel filter is regular maintenance. Fuel pump relay was optional.

Hope this is really fixed, as I said it was an intermittent stalling problem. It started slowing and became more pervasive, but very difficult to duplicate.

At at a minimum this is an order for trying to islolate the solution.

Well, I have experienced the stalling twice again this week. Only external factor I can note is that we have had some sudden temperature changes here. The car stalled both times at very low speeds. Starts right back up and runs great.

One time I was pulling the car into the garage. Able to drive hundreds of miles since (Including to the look at new cars!).

My next step is to look at the fuel pump wire under the back seat mentioned in previous posts. I have heard of the same problem and cause in older 240 sedans.

Any more suggestions. My mechanic has checked for codes. He wants the car dead!

        Thanks

Charles this is a hard one, If you still have the old relay, I would open it and make a solid continous conection just to prevent from cutting off. How is the fuel pump pressure because a dirty filter or sock on the pump can cause the pressure to flactuate. When was the last time that gas filter was replaced?

I assume your mechanic has checked the codes to see if there are any. If he has not, then do that first. Also, because you say it happens at idle, I would also look at the trottle body to see if there is a problem with it. I agree with the other response; check the gas filter to see if it is dirty and therefore causing a problem. I don't know if the fuel pump would be the problem because I would expect a code to appear for this.
