My nearest Volvo dealer is 70 miles away, and only has service on weekdays, so it is about impossible to get something fixed.
Despite a new battery in the hand held transmitter, remote did not work. Someone here suggested disconnecting the car battery for 15 minutes, which I did while working on something else. Then I tried resetting the key transmitter by the usual method of turning the ignition on and off five times, leaving it on the fifth time, then pressing one button on the key transmitter.
No luck. The previous owner, my sister-in-law, says this used to work, but quit.

Any one have a good idea?

I take it the receiver is the thing in the center of the dash behind the windshield that glows red when I first lock the door with my key. All wires are connected to it.

Incidentally, I bought a used steering rack from Eurasia in Englewood CO, real pleased with price and service.

    I take it that you are in the Denver Metro area? What dealer were you speaking of? Suggestion: I work with McDonald AG Volvo down on South Broadway in Littleton. They have an excellent service department and as equal mechanics. I haven't had a problem they couldn't solve, and they are open on Saturdays all day.:)

      Well, as luck would have it, I found someone here who has a crashed 850 he is using for parts. Pulled the receiver from the side of the dash next to the glovebox, pluggged it into my car, and everything works. My old receiver shows nothing obvious, but it has transistors and capacitors and resistors in it, so I bet something gave up in there. Will just have to offer my friend something for his old receiver and I am set!

      I am in Northwest Alabama, nearest dealer is in Huntsville Alabama. Sure, they might be able to solve this, but I can't get off work during week to go over there.

    The receiver is located on passenger side between the glove box and the sidewall or on top of the steering column. The antenna is a small copper plate inside the receiver. You ought to try another remote first. You can borrow one or get one cheap on ebay. Not sure how you'd go about checking the receiver. The little light is just an indicator. It should start blinking when the alarm is set with either the key or the remote. http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/keyless_remote-rangeext.html
    The link is to an article on Ozbrick about extending the range of the remote. I tried it but couldn't tell the diff.

      Well, I found someone who has a junk 850, but he says the remote worked, so I used his transmitter, did the reprogramming by turn9ing ignition on and off 5 times in 30 seconds and leaving on the fifth time, then pressing a button on transmitter. Nothing. Yet the doors all lock when I use the kry. So, I guess I will locate the receiver and see if it is connected. Will let you know!

        With my T-5R it seems to work better if I shoot through the glass, i.e. try to not hold the remote so it's transmitting through the door metal. That remote works from about 15 feet but my wife's V70 remote has at least a 50 ft range and through glass/not through glass makes no diff.
        Also I read here or elsewhere that one guy had better luck if he held the remote vertically with the back of it facing the car, the buttons towards him and the part with the key hook pointing up. Sounds like folk medicine but there it is. BTW the red light signals that the alarm is on. It should do one long flash when you lock the car, and then short flashe quite slowly.
