Charcoal Cannister S70

I have a trouble code with "Charcoal Cannister". Assuming this is a part of the pollution control equipment related to the gas tank/ fuel inlet, does anyone have access to info. on the part number and where to find it on my '98 S70. The dealer wants $545.00 to replace, and says Volvo's (Certified) Warranty does not include this part. My local indy shop will replace for $177.00. While I appreciate the fair quote from my local Volvo Indy shop, I have nothing but time on my hands, and would just as well replace myself. Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

What state are you in? Various states have laws covering
emission devices. Some are very strict requiring 100K
warranties. The owners manual literature has state by
state details on this (as I recall).

      Greetings Ray,
Unfortunately I live in Texas. I'll check to see, nothing to loose. will surf State sites. Won't hold my breath, as most are aware, Texas has virtually no laws protecting air, water, etc. the last Governor, (the one before Dubya),
helped pass more stringent vehicular inspection rules, and several new businesses were opening to provide testing. First thing Dubya did in office was throw out any and all enviromental legislation, and repeal all the work done by Ann Richards. Now the air quality is going from bad to worse. Any suggestions on a good place to relocate?

CA and MA are the two states where you'ld have added emisions warranty coverage as noted in your owners or maintenance manuals. Otherwise VIP doesn't cover emisions past the 4/50 federal emisions warranty.

Frank, can you provide some more details on the federal emissions warranty (I assume that's 4 years or 50K miles). My 98 S70 has 40K mi. and I was told by dealer that VIP didn't cover the charcoal canister debacle.

I'm not a "warranty expert" but federal emisions covers all cars to 4 yrs/50K miles so if you're out by delivery date now, your dealer's correct. It's written in either your owners manual or maintenance book that some emisions items have extended coverage in 2 states only but I too have heard that VIP doesn't cover certain items. If you doubt what you're being told, your only alternative is to call VCNAs customer service # to see if they have any other info.

              Greetings Frank,
Question, is the canister basically a filtering device for gas fumes? If so, perhaps this device goes beyond EPA rules and any additionl enviromental req. by state. I understand that a malfunctioning canister will not damage the engine, however, the device must be replaced in order to clear the infoumas "CHECK ENGINE" light. Your expertise is most certainly appreciated,at least by me, if not all caregivers to our Volvo S70'S.

What your Indy guy doesn't know is that when those fail, they allow carbon debris to escape, enter vacuum lines and cause other devices to fail as well, even on those models with a filter. The dealer might be pricing up to 4 related devices that often become problematic after a canistor fails as that's usually what's needed to avoid seeing the same come back with the same fault codes. It's not a well engineered system for overall road-worthy durability IMO (like so many other "great" modern day car devices). It's likely that your dealer is experienced with seeing these fail as I have while your indy guy is trying to undercut the dealer (normal business move) and thinks that all he needs is a canistor.
I'm very surprized that it's not covered under your emissions warranty.

I have the same issue with my 98 S70T5. I haven't replaced it yet as it is not covered by my VIP extended warranty (or the original, as far as I know). I was a bit surprised to learn this, but emissions equipment is generally excluded from warranty. In line with your post, Glen, mine needs the canister as well as a related filter and fittings/hoses that were contaminated with the decomposing charcoal particles. I'm beginning to think of the OBD as the "On Board Dispenser of expensive diagnoses".
