Climate Control problem V70-XC70 1998

I have '98 V70R. I am experiencing problems with Heat-A/C fan. After starting the car, the Climate Control goes into initialization mode where it will ramp the fan speed for about 1 second. If the fan speed is set to OFF or low, it then returns the fan speed to appropriate setting.

After that, I can no longer get the fan speed up. I get NO at all. Occasionally, it will work, but 90% of time it doesn't. I have tried all combos of settings on air distribution settings (floor, vents, etc...) and also close circulation or fresh air.

Upon start-up of car, the two LEDS (ACC OFF and recirculate)will flash for a short period of time signifying a Climate Control fault.

Has anyone observed similar problem and if so, what was done to resolve?

Thanks,

Paul

    Climate Control problem V70-XC70 1998

This exact same thing just happened to my 98 S70 T5.
In my case, I could hear the fan make a slight groan
noise before it was shut down. The fan had failed and
was drawing too much current and the electronics shut it
down. Restart the car and the fan would run a second or
two until it was automatically shut down and the dash
lights started to flash (happened around Christmas and
it was quite the seasonal display on the dash).

Based on the sound I heard from the fan and the people on
this board indicating that blower fan failure is common
I went ahead and replaced the fan (it is behind the glove
    box).

The fan housing was $140 from www.volvoparts.com and I was
able to replace it in less then an hour (I do have some
mechanical experience, though). The job is pretty simple.

A mechanic would read the codes to be more sure of the problem.
In my case, failed fan was the problem and it is now working fine
(just in time for window defrosting season).

The flashing LEDs indicate a fault in your ECC system and for your '98 V70, the only way to check fault codes is with Volvos VST (scan tool). I doubt that a generic scan tool will see climate fault codes so you'll need to make an appointment with your local dealer. It's likely to have a sensor or motor problem but without knowing what codes are stored, guessing here is foolish.

Hmmm. This sounds like a resistor or maybe a controller problem to me. (remember the blower fan resistor problems in the 240's?) If a controller problem, it could be due to faulty input from sensors. Can you or your dealer pull a code from the climate control system?
