Does anyone know how I can decode my Volvo's VIN? Which number or letter represents the vehicles year?

d: you can also go to 'volvoworld.com' and get into the 850 site to decode your VIN; they also have year-by-year info which model had which engine, etc., as well as the production runs for each year, chassis numbers (they do NOT all start each year with #1 and go to #200,000 in a year that produced 200,000 cars, for example: this gives you a pretty good way to figure out if yours is from the early, or late, production run. BTW, the engine number will not match the chassis number.) Good Luck. HNY, 2! --PD.

For you and anyone else interested, you can get all kinds of information on Volvo's by going to Volvo's website and more specifically the "Owners Circle" part of the website. The URL is:

www.volvocars.com - Then navigate to your country on the pull down menu. Then click on the "Owners' Circle" and register. You will get a user name and password selection next. This then allows you to personalize your Volvo data and there is all kinds of information, including a complete breakdown of the VIN information you wanted.

Position 5 Body Style

Positions 6-7 Engine Version

Position 8 Emmissions

Position 9 Check Digit

Position 10 Model Year Code

Position 11 Factory Code

Positions12-17 Serial Number

10th digit is year, up to '96. After that, I don't know for sure, but I suspect it stayed that way through 2000.

1993 = P
1994 = R
1995 = S
1996 = T

I'm guessing at these:

1999 = X
2000 = Y

You are correct. Starting with MY2001, the year will be represented by numbers. 2001 will be "1", 2002 will be "2", etc.
