key duplication: no-op the chip? S70 1999

Just got off the line with the Volvo parts folks, who confirmed that it will be well over $100 to cut a new key and "download" the codes.
Is there any way to cut the chip out of the ignition circit, etc, so that a downloaad is not necessary? (OK, I know it is a security feature...but my Sig Sauer doesn't have a computer chip in it either.) If there is a way to bypass the need for a chip/download, will that also kill the utility of the remote opener? TIA

bru, if you really want to bypass this security feature of your car (and I am not sure whay you would, since duplicating a non-imobiizer Volvo key is also very expensive), here's my idea. First take one of the keys that works with your car and carefully cut out the rubbery plasic at the top of the key. Be very careful, the imobilizer chip is in there and you DON'T want to damage it, just remove it from the key. Now that the chip (enshrouded in plastic) is separate from the key, tape it somewhere close to your ignition switch. Maybe on the inside of the knee bolster or something (you'll need to experiment). Now you have the imobilizer part of your ignition permanently engaged. There is a caveat, though. No other key with another imobilizer chip for this car will work, so you'll have to cut away the chip and throw it away for the key to work. This of course seems like a lot of trouble to save $50. Also, you will forfeit a really good anti-hotwire feature of your car. Volvo keys are very expensive even witout the imobilizer since they are pretty difficult to cut and no one except the dealer has the blanks. You just have to be careful not to loose the keys and if you do, you are out $100 (with imobilizer) or $50 (without imobilizer).

    Good luck.

Your car can't be jury rigged to work without the key. The engine computer is looking for a signal from the immobilizer that says "yep I recogonize that key" and then the engine computer will allow the car to start.

I wasn't very clear in my Q--can I rig it to avoid the "immobilizer" that has to recognize the key, and make it work like the stone-age cars of my misspent youth, with just the metal key?
