Blinker going real fast V70-XC70 1998

I have a v70 that I have no owners manual for (yet). The right turn blinkerindicator on the dash is going double speed all of a sudden. Any ideas?

Call and make an appointment at your local dealer. You will more than likely have 3 recalls/campains open, 101,101a,101b. The 101 will replace the turn signal bulb and sockets for both sides. By the way your turn signal is still working, just too fast. The 101a will put new headlight wiper stops in and adjust the torque on the arm. The 101b will install new longer lasting low beam bulbs and add a wiring harness to prolong the life of the bulbs.

Here's one for ya:

A few days ago, upon using my turn signal, the light (inside and out) just came on solid. Hazard flashers also just came on solid.

Inspection of #13 and #27 (i think 27) fuses for turn and hazards, respectively, showed no problems. I started to guess the actual flasher unit must be bad. Shop manual shows one relay for both turn signals and hazards, but different fuses for each of those functions because Hazards work w/o key being on.

But, alas, as I got in the car again, ALL SYSTEMS GO. I figured maybe the contacts on one of the fuses was not good and my R&R of said fuses fixed the problem.

Two days later, same thing. This time I pulled over, yanked out #13 and put it back in. Viola. All was well, for about 10 minutes. Then solid lights again, no flasing.

When I got home and jumped out to play, before I could touch a think, all was well again and has been for 2 days.

So, I figure I'll just replace those two fuses for kicks. But has anyone heard of this before? And why is it that turn signals and hazards both get effected if they're on different fuses, but removing & reinstalling one fuse fixed both? Is the flasher relay just not happy?

One last thing. Where the heck IS my flasher relay in case I need to yank that and replace it.

Thanks.
Happy New Year.
Adam

PS I haven't been on in a while. New format!!! Wow!

The flasher relay is the hazard switch, it's easier to get out if you pull the radio out and then reach in behind the relay and push it out. Sounds like you need a new flasher relay. I've taken the relay out, smacked it in my hand a few times and it's started it working again only to fail later.

OK. Thanks. good to know. Still seems weird that removing and reinstalling the fuse would make it come back on. Oh well, at least I now know where that relay is.

Thanks again.

Bilbo, you are experiencing a very well known problem. Here's the deal. Your front right turn signal bulb has collected some carbon on one of its terminals due to arcing. The style of bulbs chosen for that particular light assembly was incorrect for this application. Too much current and not enough contact area produce arcing and carbonizing of the contacts. You can fix this by simple removing the bulb and scraping the carbonized contacts of the bulb and the socket clean with a small Swiss army knife (it will be obvious which contacts need attention). I usually then rotate the bulb 180 degrees so that the second contact is now at the arcing side. This gives me at least 6 more months of service out of the same bulb and socket (actually last time it held up much more and was still good when the dealer replaced it via recall). Volvo does have a Volvo has a recall for this problem, where the sockets and bulbs are replaced with a different design. To me this was never a big enough deal warranting a recall, especially when there are bigger fish to fry for Volvo like AC evaps and keyless entry receivers. Oh well, cheap fix and good PR, how can Volvo go wrong?

Good luck.

There was a recall for this last year; contact your local dealer to get replaced free.

It is almost certainly that one of the bulbs is not working. Suggest that you set it blinking and walk around the car looking for a light on the right that does not work. Otherwise it has to be the flasher unit but I do not see that affecting just the right side.
