The manual for my 2016 V60 says this for tires that can be used:
235/40/18 or 235/45/18
When I bought the car it had 235/40/18 on them and that's darn low profile for me and my wife pain from chemo felt every bump. Recently went to 235/45/18 as per manual allowance. That extra bit of air, a cushion between me and the road helps. I don't care about flying through corners, I am in my 70's and those days are gone.
The problem is that the with a bigger aspect ration, my speedometer will be off a bit. Not much because I didn't change that much height.
Called Volvo to see about getting a computer update to calibrate the speedo. I was told the only thing they have is a software update if you change the wheels to a different size. Ok guys, that means you have software that calibrates for a different wheel/rim which means different diameter. Changing the aspect ratio does the same thing --- changes diameter. Service department said, yes I understand you but we only have software that can do this for a wheel/rim change.
I really don't want to get a speeding ticket for the difference of maybe 1.5 > 2 MPH difference in speed. Any ideas.

Hi,
I’m responding to this part of the thread because you asked “any ideas.”
I will put it this way a 2 MPH error is nothing to worry about. Any law enforcement officer know there there are errors in any speed devices they use. That’s part of their training and so they are actually looking for those who drive faster like say TEN MPH over the posted limit especially in a residential, school or lately work zones. Those items them an attaboy as for being a righteous citation.
2 MPH really doesn’t fly in front of a judge as “a probably cause” to stop you and definitely not a search.
I watch enough cop shows to know this nationwide.
A broken light or one that is out is another story. 😊
Cops cannot stop everyone one. A tolerance has to be built in.
Most of assignments are centered to look for safety violations.
Especially fast lane changers or not using a signals.
A term well used is “a change in the direction of intent” without proper spacing will catch their eyes right away.
A 2 MPH discrepancy will never get mentioned.
I learned that from my deceased stepfather that sped all the time even if I wasn’t in his van.
If you speed you are passing or keeping up with somebody as both mean the same thing.
In New Zealand they use speed cameras in the back of vehicles stopped along side of the road.
So unless you live there don’t worry.
I’m sure they have a tolerance on that method of law enforcement there before you get a ticket in the mail or attached to your rental car agreement and sent to you. I read that!
With that said,
You should be surprised if you will ever get anything for TWO MILES PER HOUR.
Now when a high overhead dealership is involved all gets lost somewhere between morality and a clear conscience with all service writers.
I also feel that a salesman can never be a true friend but a cautionary person on commission.
Going with your experiences in life or a gut feeling to get comfortable with any dealings, keeps life entertaining.
I have only bought two vehicles new in my lifetime and those gut blows taught me a lot about ever doing that again.
In the thread …?
A car with only 20,000 must have been a lease vehicle or maybe has a history of something else but if it feels good later, what can anyone say?
I’m glad the Brickboard is back online.
I have to clear out all my history inside of Safari to get away from the 403 errors it finds. And that only works sometimes.

We do have speed cameras in areas that I drive. I also believe in not being a hazard in the road by going a lot slower than the flow of traffic. One place around Baltimore Maryland is a 5 lane highway (10 total) and the speed limit is 55 MPH. Does anyone do 55 MPH? No they do not, and there are speed cameras. The speed at times drops to 45 MPH. Does anyone do 45 MPH? No they do not. So I try to keep some sanity and keep up with the flow although not the crazy lane fast flow. The cameras will click on you at 61 MPH and I will tow the line and not go over 61 MPH. That 2 MPH difference would mean the difference between a camera click and going by without a click. So I have to remember to keep it at 59 MPH while going past the camera.
I stopped by the dealer today and talked to the guy that sold me the car. He looked at his computer and it definitely said two tires recommended, 235/40/18 and 235/45/18. Ok - so if it says either then the service bay has the ability to tweak the update for either tire. He said he'll look into it.
He asked if I bought the tires from them. No I did not. The he said maybe that's why they don't want to do it. Well if I am forced to use a dealer (VIDA software) then I think they should be forced to do what is right and do the work I am offering to pay them to do.
I do not get along with their service department, not one bit. There's an independent shop I use when I can and have no problems with them. They are a reasonable price, nice people and do good work. A VIDA subscription is $15,000 a year. I do know an independent Volvo shop that will buy a three day subscription and do the work but they want to make sure that it can be done first. I'll have to pay for the 3 day subscription and the labor.
It's a car, the dealer is there to work on Volvo cars, why create all the stress! Ugh!!!!!
Tomorrow I'll call a dealer that is 1.5 hours away and ask for a price on the 235/45/18 tires. Then I will ask how much to synchronize those new tires with a computer update. If they give a price, that means it can be done.

Hi,
This is an interesting dilemma you are willing to saddle yourself with.
You are doing a lot of time consuming shopping nose to nose.
Are you retired like me?
I don’t care to go with your line of entertainment but I’ll think on it with you. 😊
I didn’t know there was a $15,000 dollar a year subscription to any software program per user?
That works out to $41 a day use fee. That means the tires must be $10 a piece more than any tire shop on a set of four even if you buy a set and one is free.
That free part is always questionable.
I have a problem with nitrogen filled tires when common atmosphere is about 80% nitrogen and it’s supposedly free. Who buys that equipment?
Oh my, the gaming on newest things that we get tested with.
Do you think that you get a deal or discount when you don’t buy the whole subscription thing?
It doesn’t usually work that way with anything else on low volumes except “clearances” that don’t sell to suckers.
I hope the independent shop has a list of people that need appointments to use that software on?
Don’t you see it’s interesting that you still have those people that speed right on by you? I do!
Are the new cars stealthy enough to not get a citation or does their LiDAR contraption pay the ticket? 🤫
When you say it “clicks” on you, is that just a flash warning as a heads up to pay attention gimmick?
You do know someone has to review those snap shot or CCTV. Hey, it a job not done for free.
We have intersections with cameras in California.
There are there for people out here who cannot stand seconds behind an obstacle, moving or not, more than absolutely necessary.
One MPH driven for one whole only hour only gets you a minute.
What does four MPH get you for fifteen minutes. 15 seconds?
I see people jet around just to jump if front of me to get off at and exit that in a few seconds would have been there for them without an almost reckless maneuver.
Of course, invited them by driving with a safety gap in front of myself. 🤔 for those to busy to keep busy riding with others.
I RIDE pleasurably and don’t make it a job to DRIVE in a frenzy to make payments.
Good luck with finding comfort for your wife as I understand your efforts in finding a compromise.

That's $15,000 annual for the entire Volvo dealer shop, not per seat.
Yeah me too "Of course, invited them by driving with a safety gap in front of myself." I watch the crazy people going in and out of traffic and in the end, we all get to the same place at almost the same time. I really think there is something in the air, the water or the food that is making people lose their minds.
With cars and shops we live in a not-so-pleasant time. I remember a time you could take your car to any good shop and they could buy the parts and fix the car. Now for so many things, because of the computerized cars, you have to go to the dealer. So I have one Volvo dealer in my city and they for some reason don't want to do the job, what can I do? Instead of the consumer holding the cards, the dealers now hold the cards.
And yes I am retired. Also because of my wife's AML Leukemia event the past 3.5 years have meant no travel. After reaching remission, Johns Hopkins would take her for a bone marrow transplant. Lived 61 days in hospital...yuck. But it worked and she is cancer free. Except she has chemo induced peripheral neuropathy in both legs, below the knees. So she can't walk well, has a lot of pain and we don't travel. So I have time on my hands. In my 70's and my old habit was to play guitar, which I've played all my life. Arthritis put a stop to that and yes -- I have time on my hands.
Since the 1970's I ran my own businesses and had a loyal clientele and probably due to bending over backward for me to serve them. So I assume that other business people want to do the same, serve their customers well. I find that is less and less true, I can get a bit miffed when they don't want to serve their customer. I'm not that PITA customer, the one you want to fire, I just want to be treated kindly, truthfully, etc. When they don't - yes I have time on my hands to "discuss" issues with them.
The local Volvo dealer made a mistake on a V50 I owned. It was years ago but they were supposed to do a warranty job on the PCV. I read the Volvo TSB / warranty and it showed all the bits to replace. Got the car home, first thing I did was open the hood (I'm a car guy). Felt the PVC hose and it was hard as a rock. They didn't change it. Also the ring connector at the PVC box was missing and instead they used a zip tie. New intake gaskets were supplied from Volvo USA for the warranty. Did they use them? I'll never know. Called the dealer and service says, "oh we only replace those hoses when needed." Humph! You were paid to do it, the part was supplied in the kit, I think it should be done. And that zip tie!?!?! Service said bring it back we'll do it. When I went to pick up the car they also handed me a $50 gift card toward parts in their shop. Hush money? Maybe normal people don't check or know what to check - I do. Hence the reason they don't like me.....I think.
Today will be interesting when I make the call to a dealer that is 90 minutes away. How much for 235/45/18 Michelin tires for my V60. Then - how much to re-calibrate the speedometer software for the bigger tire? I have time on my hands. :)

I’m surprised Volvo can’t help you. Actually I’m not….
Here is another option. Do you have a GPS unit or a navigation app? If so, you can determine the speed variation. Test your car at 70 for example for the variation. Or your usual highway cruising speed. Then make a mental note of it and with time you will remember the variation. For example, I put slightly larger tires on my 2017 Alltrack. At 70 mph I’m actually going 72.

I did the GPS and at 59 I'm doing 61 MPH. The dealer and I do not get a long, not one bit. I thy they have forgotten that they are the "service" department. You'd think they are doing me some favor by taking my money? I know I won't be buying another Volvo. This is the 4th in my life and no longer a fan.
I really like the tires and won't be getting rid of them. Yep - I'll learn about the gap in speedo and real speed. One guy suggested a dash cam Rove R2-4k and he said the speed is shown and is easy to read.

Agreed - I would never buy a newer Volvo. Only an old one. When I needed a newer car I bought the Alltrack from a VW dealer and have been treated well by the dealer. Glad I did. It has been a good car.

Glad the VW dealer is good to you. I don't know, maybe some of my dealer problems is that I'm not just a driver, I can also do very extensive work on cars. I've even taken engines apart to fix. So when a dealer is selling me some --- well I have no other words, selling me a lie, I get a bit upset. I also catch them when they don't do all the work that is a covered warranty. So I guess I get a reputation with the dealers.
Our next car is going to have comfort as number one priority. Post cancer and lingering lifetime pain from chemo rearranges wants and needs. Comfort and ride comfort is a need.

My dealer did stick me with some unnecessary fees which ticked me off initially. The salesman was good and we became friends. Not his fault. I let some stuff go because they dropped the price a grand just before I bought it. 3 year old car with 20k. Overall a good deal!
I maintained my 240 and 2 850’s myself. I do what I can on my Alltrack. My ability to work on cars is limited these days. My hands are a mess and don’t have their old strength. Broken and reconstructed wrist in my dominant hand. My other hand has needed surgery for arthritis for a few years. Been stalling on that one…
Sorry to hear about the cancer. That’s a tough one. If you desire comfort and RELIABILITY you might consider a Toyota Avalon. They ride great and are very comfortable.

My wife's in her late 60's and I'm into my 70's and the hand arthritis really threw me a curve. Played guitar all my life, thought senior years of retirement would let me play more but nope - osteo-arthritis in the hands says no-no-no. And working on cars is not minimal. We like to have some storage like the V60 (no trunk) we have a Honda CR-V that is bullet proof. What we are looking at for the Volvo replacement is a 2019 Lincoln MKC. That platform had some engine issues but they were ironed out by 2019. Even the issues before were rare. My 2016 V60 just had an oil consumption test done, it's using oil. Had about 51,000 miles on it when I had the test completed. Everyone said the dealer would not find anything, it is their usual method of passing on problems to get past warranty issue. Yeah a suit made them cover 7 years or 100,000 for the ring problems. Cars went to pistons with low tension wiper rings and it bit them in the butt. Just to save a few sips of gas it caused A LOT of problems. The fix is to replace with normal rings.
We test drove two Lincoln MKC's and they were very, very comfortable. As I would have said in my 20's, it road like a grandpa car. But now I want the grandpa car ride. And the 2019 has just enough tech for us. I don't like a touch screen that controls everything.
Test drove a newer V60 and no way. They are 4 cylinder engines with super charger and a turbo charger. Stressing those engines to the mas means more problems and less longevity.
My first Volvo was a 1964 P544. Maybe I should go back to those days, that thing was very simple to work on. Except the SU carbs were a bit persnickety.
