Reasonable Shop S40-V40

Hello all once again. I was wondering if anyone knows of a reasonable shop for general repair of my 2003 S40, or in the near term a free-lance mechanic looking for a side job. I have had sparse work in the last 2-3 years and the quote I got from my erstwhile shop for a job consisting of replacing the steering rack is too high.

I have been told new racks are gone but remanufactured ones are no problem. I need someone who can determine which other related parts are needed and carry out the repair and restoration. I would buy the parts and pay them a flat fee for the job.

Know of anyone? It ain't me, first I don't have the location and I doubt I have the skill. A one-day job for a real mechanic would probably take me a week!

Thanks for any help you can offer. DougW

A good repair garage that has a wheel alignment rig of their own could probably do the job.

My tire store Stansfield Tire in Lowell MA does enough front end work that I am sure that they could do the job.

Also Triangle Service in Chelmsford MA has a Bear alignment rig and I am sure that they do enough front end work and could do the job, I am talking about an old school big alignment rig that the car drives up on.

Hi, you got me thinking?

I understand your dilemma about not having a location to Jack Up a car in todays urban settings.
Despite ordinances there are other avenues to overcome this

I never had the need of what I’m about to suggest but it should be a growing enterprise from my understanding.
I have seen on TV and so, possibly on the Internet, that Some localities on the East coast have automotive rental spaces.
Some spaces have lifts and even tools that you rent or lease for hours or days.
It requires a deposit of course and these are used by individuals or groups of people that you are looking for.
These places use a network of those that are on list for hire.
Almost the same as hiring some one at your “local junkyards.”
With these people they locate and pull parts you need and can ship them to you.
The Junkyards offer up these names as it helps recycles more parts.
Give some a call.
Check within those circles and maybe you can get yourself hooked up.

As far as a person on the side, I suggest you try the local public school programs in your area.
There are vocational trade schools that have students looking for and do side work.
In classes, they can do the work under the supervision of instructors during class times.
Most are a minimal fee that goes to the school.

The instructors usually welcome interest in their programs as their educational institutions are required interact within their communities.
This is especially so, if a program gets any form of several governments offering funding.
There governments start from the cities right on up to Federal level.

Junior Colleges and Private schools get apprenticeships when working with industrial companies.
These even happen across several states to cultivate a labor force.
It’s a matter of locating a companies and its intended direction of purpose.
Tool makers need mechanics to buy their tools and so forth.

I know it sounds like like an “end run” game for what you need at the moment but with that said, you could become a student

Sometimes one has to think out of the box with creatively to search them out.
Our country is slowly waking back up to the fact we have all but destroyed vocational trades.

Worth a shot to poke your fingers around on the Internet.
Almost like “Letting your Fingers do the Walking in the Yellow Pages” in my day.
(:-)
You can turn your microphone off before you kiss this all off!
Some Computer devices have them ears on all the time. (:-)
Welcome to the BRICKBOARD.

I neglected to mention that I am in DFW by the way. Thanks for the note. You have me thinking that contacting an automotive training center or a high school with a trades department might be the best bet. With an instructor present it just might be what I am looking for.

THANKS!!! Doug
