ETS/limp mode S70 1999

Hi all,

Im working on a 1999 s70 non-turbo that is currently in limp mode. I replaced the TPS sensor by disassembling the ETM. I also cleaned the throttle plate and throat. Fairly sure I did it properly (I repair electronics). I also pulled apart the potentiometer out of the old unit and it DID have the scratches/physical damage that would indicate that was faulty.

The car runs better, but still idles rough and has the ETS light on. Not sure how to reset that. These are the codes it threw before I cleared them as read by my OBDII scanner, which may have been left over pre-ETM rebuild:

P1620 - MIL REQUESTED BY ETS
P1017 - ECM fail?
P1019 - P1019=ECM-902A Throttle unit communication, Faulty signal
P1020 - P1020=ECM-902B Throttle unit communication, Faulty signal
P1021 - P1021=ECM-903F Throttle unit, Faulty signal
P1043 - P1043=ECM-9520 Accelerator pedal (AP) position sensor, Faulty signal
P1054 - no speed ABS
P1057 - TCU request CEL
P1059 - P1059 MIL requested by the throttle unit
P1108 -

This is what i could find by googling. Still waiting for the codes to reset after reinstalling the ETM. He'd said the speedo was intermittent, but then seemed to work just now when we test drove.

I plan on pulling the abs unit and resoldering connection points next, as well as hunting for vacuum leaks.

Any idea where else to look? There was a small vacuum hose that I just figured out goes from the top of the air cleaner to the bottom that had come off- could that cause any of these conditions?

thanks, Carissa

We have owned 4 700s, 3 850s, and 2 xc70s. As a family, we have driven over 800K in those cars.

I have our cars serviced by a dealer, and they never replaced more than one item (if That) when we had a problem with these cars.

Once, the dealer even took the anti-lock unit out of our service writer's car to see if mine was defective - the anti-lock would go out if I went over a certain kind of bump - it would always reset when the car was shut off and started for the next trip. It only happened about once a week or so.

I suggest that you take the car to a dealer for evaluation - most new car dealers only charge one hour's labor for troubleshooting, although I found that my dealer charges $175 for a full scan on an XC70.

BTW have you tried disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes or so?

Doing that cured a problem that I had with my TPS sensors and my remote key. A TPS low tire warning left overnight would lock me out of the car! Evidently rebooting the computers fixed my car.

Ok, update: so its still throwing the same codes even after the TPS replacement. Im thinking the throttle body unit needs to be replaced. Will order one from }Xemodex. But there are a few other codes as well.. P1108- MAP sensor and P1043 accelerator pedal sensor. Which is the MAP sensor indicated by this code? Hard to find info online..

    Thanks, C

Before spending a bunch of money you should check the condition of the wiring to/from the throttle body including the connector pinning.
Cleaning the connections at the ECM has also been known to fix throttle errors, our own car included

Ok, ill try cleaning everything. Found a MAP sensor, cheap enough. will try swapping and cleaning and see if that clears anything up. At least the car is drivable. All this module stuff is new to me; im a longtime 240 driver and mechanic, lol
