Crankshaft Sprocket misaligned? V70-XC70

I recently replaced my front crank seal and have been plagued with P0017, I figured I had made an error so went back to recheck and moved the exhaust camshaft about 1? tooth.

Since I had to replace the seal I removed the crank sprocket and I believed there are splines to prevent misalignment? I am ready to go back for another reset!

FYI there were no CEL's before the seal repair. I have searched many other sites for two weeks!

I know the intake and exhaust position sensors have the identical P/N so I am wondering if a bad position sensor could be possible? I am swapping them now.

Actually considering buying the special tools for camshaft and crankshaft alignment? I did use "Matthews Volvo" site for info.

What I know is that the Crank and Cam are sending incorrect info to the ECU.

Thanks for listening.

Did not make it to Bavarian Auto Sport on Last Fri. as the message board warning was "No oil Pressure-Stop engine", so I'm thinking I will drop the pan and was surprised to find a very clean crankcase but over compressed seal.

Volvo dealer had to order the seals, so I decided to tackle the timing issue and I believe corrected P0017! However, a quick test drive (2 miles) and the warning appears again.

The front crank seal and oil pump have been done so I'm wondering about the pressure regulator and its location?

"...Actually considering buying the special tools for camshaft and crankshaft alignment?..."

You don't need any special alignment tools unless you've separated the cam sprockets from their respective cams, which I don't think you've done as you only mentioned replacing the crank seal. It just sounds like one or more shafts crept a bit while you had the belt off.

If you currently have the T-belt on then hand-crank the engine clockwise until the crank sprocket timing marks align. Then look and see which way each cam sprocket needs to rotate in order to align them with their respective marks.

Ignore all the stuff you may read about preloading the VVT hubs. There again, that's only something that is required if you've separated cam sprockets/hubs from the cam shafts.

Thank you very much Chris! I am now back into finding the problem, looking closely at the crank sprocket timing alignment!

Don't forget to inspect the VVT sensor at the top of the engine. Old oil makes it slow to respond.

KlausC this is a good point as I am still using Liqui Moly "motor savor' which slowed cam seal leakage but did not. Cam seals will be a major project in the future!

5w-30 not 5w-40?

FYI to Chris Mullet, I had mistimed the crank sprocket?!

Rear cam seals are easy, front seals are farmed out for me :)

5W30 is just fine. Nice to know you are using synthetic oil. That helps a lot.

I did replace all the camshaft seals (4) and inspected both VVT sprockets and reset the timing belt. Changed to 5W-30 and I now see axial or radial play only on the exhaust. Intake is fine!

I believe previous owners lack of good OCI's could be responsible for EXH. sprockets internal wear?

I also have more noise in the TB area, makes sense that replacement is the answer but she is running closed loop.

Any BB folks have experience with wobbly sprockets long term?

Axial play on the exhaust VVT hub can occur with age and poor oil change intervals. Unless it is creating check engine errors, replacement is not warranted.\

Glad to hear all else is well! As someone hear used to say, drive it like it is stolen!

Update: After a couple days P0017 returned even though power and MPG seem very good! I also have Volvo diagnostic of ECM 671C which is exhaust timing "high".

Thinking I could have missed the crank TDC again, I went back in for reset #2, only this time I took an enlarged close-up photo and could identify the notches marked the valley carefully and did the reset! Locking cams, checking the sprocket positions of the previous timing marks while making very slight sprocket adjustments. My thought at the time "These are not that far off!"

Hoping for the best the P0017 came right back, I am again suspecting the exhaust VVT or what damage might occur if "black out" the CEL?

Appointment has been made with Bavarian Auto Sports this Fri. and he is thinking possible timing? I did not have ECM 671C at that time!

I was able to do more research in my confusing E-Manual and verified it could only be installed in one position!
Sorry, my Bad!
