V90 Manual Transmission V70-XC70

I have a 2005 V70 5T with a six-speed manual transmission with 350,000 km. I love the car and plan to keep it forever. Maybe I'm getting neurotic but it seems more difficult to get into reverse lately. There seem to be gates that stick, I can get it into reverse if I roll the car ahead a bit or force it into gear with a hard snap. What should I look for in repairs? clutch adjustment (hopefully) or transmission work?
Any advice?
Don

I'm only familiar with the setup on my 1998 V70 - 5-speed. I had to change the shifting cables since the rubber bushings on the transmission failed. I would pull the air cleaner box up and take a look at the cable ends. Keep the car going - I am at 476,00o miles now.

Hi,

Boy you have driven the hell out of that car in 24 years!
There only one place it can, when it does and that is used parts heaven.

There’s is hope for some on a few used FWD cars, to go the distance with Volvo’s reputation at stake.
Don know about the latest cars though and with them saying they are going to all electric soon.

This might be good with that strategy, if they keep it as simple and in price ranges like the 240s were.
The whole cordless tool charging fiasco of systems of past is what keeps my wallet, with a decent amount of saved money, sitting in my 240s.

I’m glad I missed all the trials and tribulations, only to see the whole industry changing before our eyes.

Good on ya!

Phil

Agree with the other two gentlemen. A fluid change and careful examination of the shifter rod and whatever linkage and joints the shifter has.

Thanks for the advice and comments. The clutch seems to be properly adjusted with engagement when the pedal is an inch or so off the floor. I have scheduled a fluid change next week as part of the annual inspection and will go from there.
Great list for advice on these great cars.

Suggest using only the Volvo recommended fluid or the Redline MTL Will mentioned.

Transmission fluid changed yesterday with the correct Volvo fluid. At $70 a liter it is quite expensive but much cheaper that transmission work. Summer tires on and I'm back on the road.

What's the verdict? Is it better than it was?

I detect the shifting is smoother and it was time for some preventative maintenance.

When the car is stationary, in 1st or R, and you are holding down on the clutch pedal, how far do you lift your foot from the floor before the car starts to move? (Trying to eliminate clutch drag or adjustment as a culprit.)

I second the vote for a fluid change. Low or worn fluid may not be the cause of the trouble but the peace of mind knowing that it's fresh is a good thing. It's not a terrible job as IIRC. Redline MTL came recommended and is what I used.

IMO a likely culprit is a worn shifter and linkage. There's plastic isolation mounts that could be worn after so many years of use.

Don't know details of this transmission but likely no synchromesh on reverse. Not normally a problem as the gears are rotating slowly at that point. Always select when stationary to give it the best chance. Historically with old gearboxes it was common to select 1st and then reverse if it was reluctant, especially with cold oil. This might work for you. Mileage means that it's likely worn to some degree. I would change the fluid and then perhaps change it again after another 1000km.
