Check Engine Light - Coil Pack Suspect? S40-V40 2003

Hello, while in the process of installing new spark plugs in my beloved 2003 S40, when I pulled the two wires that supply power to one of the coil packs, the insulation on those wires crumbled and are now almost completely bare.

I put new plugs in and tried to insert the two wires back into the connector and I think I got them connected, but when I start the motor, it runs great but the "Check Engine" light is on.

Could it be caused by the two wires being close to each other and perhaps arcing? What should I reinsulate the two wires with? Like I say, the old insulation nearest to the business end of the wire is pretty much gone.

Any insight greatly appreciated.

Regards,

DougW

Inserting the wires may not have been enough to create a 'good' connection and now you have a random misfire. You should get a new plug.

Why not re-insulate the two wires. The plugs were brand new with maybe 15 second total of running time on them. Doug

I think Klaus means the plug on the end of the wires. Hopefully it comes with a long enough pigtail to get past the crumbly insulation.

I think I have enough info now. I was just trying to find out whether having little or no insulation on those two wires that plug into the coil pack could cause the Check Engine light to come on. Thanks!

I didn't mean the spark plug. I meant the coil plug! Those are very low voltage wires, they shouldn't arc.
