2008 XC70 - hood open errors after repair performed V70-XC70 2008

Hello all!

So, here's the situation. I have a 2008 XC70. Lots of miles, but a decent car overall.

This week, I needed to have the entire PCV system replaced on the car. When I picked it up today from the mechanic, it was a throwing a "Engine Hood Open" error. I got out, opened the hood, slammed it a few times...no dice.

Something tells me that this is going to be a pricey fix. And I'd rather not spend much to fix it (No, I'm not mechanically inclined).

With that said...

I take it that there's no way that I can just pull a fuse somewhere, and make this light/notification disappear?

If not, what does this typically involve to fix, and how much am I looking at?

I will chime in. The mechanic screw up. Plain and simple. In his haste, he dislodged a wire that goes to the left front latch. This is also a security system problem as the car does not think the hood is closed when the car doors are locked.

It should be an easy 'fix'. Any reasonable mechanic should be able to find the hood latches (there are 2 of them) and find the wires. Take it back the the same repair shop and ask them to fix it.

Just an added thought on this subject.
I looked at an '08 just the other day at a large car warehouse adjacent to Teterboro Airport. Fancy cars are what they want to sell (BMWs, MB, higher end sedans etc.) but some trade-ins from older, arguably nicer cars are to be found there.

There was an '02 XC-70 there as well.

I had to pull several times to get the '08's hood to release. The access to repair / replace a busted hood release cable is a lot if the hood's closed. I've read that lubing this cable is smart to do. Doubtless the example I saw, with 145K, needed this maintenance.

Maybe lube yours while you're dealing with this.

I regularly lube the catches, biannually. The cable itself isn't a problem as it is not exposed to weather. Use a petroleum based product, not WD40. I found that WD40 disappears in a couple of months - only good for a temporary fix.

Didn't you pay good money for the repair?

why won't the mechanic fix it? He must have seen the error warning when he ran the car.

Suggest that you might talk to the better business bureau - or... you might tell him you will take your car to a dealer and bill him for the repair. Get an estimate from a dealer.

Lastly I love our '08, but a problem with the driver's window sometimes won't go down with a touch of the button - my dealer has programmed the problem away 5 or 6 times but it keeps coming back in a few months.

Perhaps it could be a programming problem.

I took a good look at my '08 XC 70 and could find no simple switches around the hood.

The latches are buried so I could not determine if there are any wires going to them - I think that there were wires going to a hood latch on our 850s

To me, it looks like one has to take a LOT of the front end apart to get at the latches.

    Maybe Klaus will chime in.
