Transmission service Required V70-XC70

the v70 has 182K miles on it. Never had any trans. issues. I just checked the fluid- and it is not dark at all. Looks good, actually. the car shifts fine, although we had a very weird incident last week. Doing @50mph, getting ready for an off-ramp, when the car felt like it hit a pothole where there wasn't one. Kinda freaky. The car then began to act as though the no spin feature was applied and was very sluggish on acceleration from a dead stop. This is our first V70, a plain jane w/out turbo that has served us well except for the ignition locking mechanism nuttiness. that is another long story.
Am I now looking at a costly transmission issue? Paid 6500.00 w/ the trade in of my 91 Bertone coupe. - so, 4500.00 total for a 2004 v70. It may be time to cut my loss. I have read about a lot possibilities as to what is going on. But first check the OBD. Oh wait - that was on the Bertone!

Before you go off on the wrong path, you need to check the codes with a scanner. Something put the tranny in limp home mode.

After you get the code read (most car part stores will do this for free), disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to reset the codes to zero. This should get you going again. Just remember to fix the problem!

thank you. I just spent a nice hour in the parking lot of an Oreilly auto center with people at the counter that don't really want to be there on a sunday morning. much less hear someone say 'Good Morning'. and the code reader given to use was an 'Innova' or the like. Did not read but 6 codes, none make sense. Plus, as mentioned in the other response, the unit identified the vehicle, year, model. What came up: ECM faulty control module 0100. A03B, 940C, E000, 922C cruise control, E003 config fault, lastly TCM E000 faulty comm, P0600
the fun I had in the parking lot - while checking the abs system, I heard relays in the rear left quarter computer then the dash warning - abs fail, no braking ability! And the Check engine light plus the ABS light both on. With the Transmission service required readout.
Unplugged the unit after writing down what I could that made some sense, handed it back to another clerk who did not want to be there, Seems NO one wants to hear niceties in the A.M.
Started the vehicle right up, no messages, no warning lamps, the ever present basic Service message was there - and I know how to get rid of it, I just don't mind it anymore. Drove home, tested acceleration & Brakes, but in reverse order! NO Issues showing. Wheee! I have been a mechanic all my working life. I am now at the point where it is actually time to relegate repair responsibility to a repair shop. If those codes mean anything to anyone, Please share! Love my Volvo - I know my wife is safe in driving it.
      except when it doesn't!

The errors will probably come back, later than sooner? Sounds like communication between the computers is getting erratic. Totally ignore the ABS errors/messages.

If your battery is getting weak, that will contribute to the problem, but only at engine start.

It's not fun having the CEL come on and limp home activated. Too bad the error codes don't have dates on them! Some of the 'pending' errors could have been there in a while. Other errors are generated by errors, like the ABS codes.

Keep track of when the errors come back.

Thanks for the support! I did the one thing I could that was fast and inexpensive. Changed the Spark plugs. And boy, did they need it. the odd rough idling is not there any longer, and no warnings so far. onward.

2004 V70 with multiple error codes. After all the information I decided to take it to a reliable Volvo service shop - not the dealer. The mechanic mentioned uploading software updates, 230.00 charge. Otherwise, the vehicle is in good shape, perhaps replace the front struts eventually. The trans fluid was a good amber color, no dirt or contaminants seen.
Have any other v70 2004 owners had this service? and is it a real thing? When I picked the car up from the shop, there were no error codes showing, and it is almost a week with no problems. Is this something a dealership would offer? and what is the average charge to plug a proprietary Volvo sensor diagnostic to the P2 series? Thanks again.

Yes, the software update for tranny issues is for real. More often needed by 2001-2003 V70 models but not unheard of on a 2004. You should be all set and good to go....

Sounds about what a Volvo dealer would charge for the update.

Well Boy Howdy, I think the car has gone 'tits up', pardon the expression - but it is fitting. Commuter lane drive home, nearing the offramp to home, we experienced the familiar 'pothole' hesitation, twice. Then the dash went dead and every damn light lit up like a Christmas tree on steroids. We did get lucky and limped home. This morning - the Volv just doesn't want to do it any longer. Ignition, engine failure warning, dead. Last chance visit to previous Volvo shop via tow truck. I think California still has a $1000.00 payout for getting older cars off the road. Not worth much as it sits now. Had to take the 66 Studebaker Cruiser for the commute. Lucky to have it as backup. I will follow up after the visit to the shop. been a great car until today.

                  How did you make out?

I am no expert on DIM or CEM problems with V70’s but may be worth checking those out.

The "dash goes completely dead" part and all the communications codes make me think of the bad solder joints in some ABS units.
They say the ABS' cold joints are the ones for amateurs to repair as they are larger. The units can be sent out for repair too.

If an easier look-see or repair is what the OP wants then he should look there next.

Yes to what KlausC said but don't be surprised if one or more of the parts stores you visit have a rudimentary code reader which might not read transmission codes..
