2104 S60 Trans Fluid S60 2014

Any need to change the trans fluid? FCP Euro suggests so, but the job looks like a bear. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Discuss this with a dealer. See what they may want to do.

I have read that some European cars do not have info about changing antifreeze or ATF because some countries require a manufacturer to state all the hazardous waste an auto may generate over its lifetime.

US dealers may not think the same.

It's not really a hard job -- easier on the T5 than the T6 as you don't need to remove the airbox. Use the Aisin fluid previously mentioned. I do 3 or 4 drain and fills of the system, over filling by about half a quart each time. On the final fill, you must have the car level, running, and monitor the trans oil temperature with VIDA or a OBD scanner until it reaches at least 50C (122F); you then removed the level set plug and allow the fluid to drain until it stops. You do not need a lift -- the job can be done with the car on the ground. Or you can use ramps or stands. Whatever it takes to level it.

If your model does not have a transmission dip stick, then it is no longer home serviceable unless you have a lift. The car must be completely level when adding ATF.

There are some DIY'ers that say you can disconnect both hoses to the radiator, use the engine to pump out 2 quarts and add 2 quarts to the return line - repeating for 12 quarts. That might work, I haven't tried it.

There isn't much room in the engine bay...

NEVER allow a shop to use a machine to pump out/flush ATF.

And yes, the automatics need a flush at around 80K miles, and 50K thereafter.

I’m going to go out on a limb and “guess” that when the S60s switched from the 2.5T to the 2.0 DriveE that they also switched, at the same time, from the AW55 dip stick trans to the “stand tube in the drain plug” trans, whatever Aisen calls that one. Anyway if it’s the older dip stick trans then I would use 3309 fluid.

My DIY understanding is that while there isn't a dipstick they use an overflow tube in the drain plug so that you can't overfill. Namely, you add until it overflows out of the drain plug so you know it's topped off. But I think there is a port to add fluid. I haven't looked for lines to the radiator tank. My goal is finding the correct fluid for this trans. There's the asin brand, genuine Volvo, and moly from Germany, plus universal-implant stuff from Valvoline and Quaker State. What is correct stuff without Volvo-tax added to the price?

        See 2014 S60 Owners Manual, Section 10 - Specifications, p. 367:
        https://volvornt.harte-hanks.com/manuals/2014/2014-Volvo-S60-Owners-Manual.pdf

According to the Volvo Owners Manual, the spec'd ATF for 2014 S60 is Volvo AW-1.

        ipd sells AW-1.

ipd also sells the Aisin equivalent ATF: Type WS (JWS3324) for about half the price.

          The Aisin-branded fluid works perfect.
