ignition key 1997 850 replacement

Hello all,

I have been reading through the information on the FAQ files and am wondering if the 850 is about the same if one wants to change out the ignition key.

I just bought a 1997 850 and the ignition switch is wonky.

Bob

I depends on your definition of wonky. If it seems to move too much when in position II, run. then it may be the spring in the electrical portion of the switch - this part is prone to wear.

If the key moves up and down while in the slot, well so long as it doesn't fall out while driving...

The 850 key assembly(cylinder) is close to the 960 in design, but I wouldn't bet on it.

The plastic cover around the steering cover requires a T15 and T20. The T15 is way up inside and hard to get to.

What happens is that when one is apparently in full running mode, the headlights, windshield wipers, and turn signals don't work. The heater is only half working.

The car runs fine, brake lights work, but a lot of this electrical stuff does not. I drove it home in this condition. BUT

I now know that if you back the key off a tad from its run position,i.e., a slight bit counterclockwise, all of the electrical stuff starts to work properly.

I haven't looked at the switch enough to speak to its various positions but will do this afternoon.

      Thank you for your reply.

Quite common. Remove the plastic pieces from the steering column. You will need a Torx set, get one with longish handles. Or, like I hobbled along with for a long time, a Craftsman T15 with the black plastic cut off.

On the left side of the column you will find the electrical portion of the ignition switch. A metal housing. Do NOT remove any wires. Replace the metal part.

        Part looks like this:

Looks to be the same as the the 700/900.
