Mild hesitation on almost new 99 S70. S70

I just bought an S70 with only 36K miles. I think it was used regularly, just sparingly. It was garaged. The only flaws are a few scrapes and a dented drivers side front fender, the previous owner might have been spatially challenged. The timing belt was replaced when the car was 14 years old with only 28K.

I have been driving it for a few days now and it starts right up and drives pretty well. It doesn't seem to have full power though, it seems underpowered compared to my 94 850 NA, also it feels a bit hesitant, no shuddering hesitating or stalls, just a mild hesitant feeling. I am thinking it is the throttle body. Any other thoughts on what this hesitation might be would be appreciated.

It might be the throttle body, or, just carboned up cylinders. I don't suggest a full blown Italian tune up, but you should see if you can get it to 4,000 rpm for a few minutes. 2nd gear is probably your best bet. Make sure the engine is fully warmed up first. After several 4K runs, then take it up to 5,000 for 30 seconds or so.

Check the crankcase vacuum with the engine warm, glove test. I assume this engine never got hot enough to burn off acids in the oil.

The vacuum lines, coolant lines, etc. need to be inspected and replaced if needed. Don't forget the brake fluid!

    Start using synthetic engine oil.

Thanks for the info regarding going forward with this car! I cleaned the throttle body and that cleaned up the hesitation pretty well. The transmission feels odd underfoot, not exactly slipping off the line but the acceleration doesn’t seem to match the pressure I am putting on the pedal. I have yet to change the transmission fluid maybe that will clear it up. Any thoughts?
      Thanks!

If it the car has been sitting for long periods of time it could be bad gas. Before tackling the throttle body, you could try putting a bottle of Chevron Techron concentrated fuel system cleaner in it with a full tank of premium gas. Or perhaps a bottle of BGK or Marvel Mystery Oil.
