V70XC Ford Ownership V70-XC70

I have 1999 V70xc which I purchased used and am very happy with the car.

During the time I was looking for a V70xc I had numerous people talked about "issues" with model year 2001 and beyond because of changes brought about by Ford's ownership. Can anybody brief me if this is valid? Trying to ascertain
what model years to stay away from when I upgrade to a newer V70xc. Not interest in a V90.

Thank you.

I think you'd be hard pressed to blame Ford for a Volvo's ills. Ford was smart about it, they weren't putting Ford parts in Volvos, they were making Fords out of Volvos!

If you're shopping for a replacement for your V70XC, do some research into the AWD systems used. The AWD in your '99 is the least reliable of the bunch. The newer systems are much less prone to problems.

FWIW, I took a 2001 V70 2.4T to 268K without any tranny issues (or a flush for that matter).

      " FWIW, I took a 2001 V70 2.4T to 268K without any tranny issues (or a flush for that matter). "

That's excellent service from the auto transmission in your 2001.

My 2000 V70 SE has the AW55-5X SN 5-speed auto gearbox (same as 2001 - ?) and is passing through 261K with regular 52.5K drain-and-fill intervals w/3309 ATF.

What do you think is the secret to your transmission's long life with no flushes?

Dumb luck I suppose. The Honda Odyssey I drive now has me making up for lost time. I've been doing drain-and-fills with every oil change since the rebuild.

If the "Stop Neutral" feature (Ford's "engineers" meddling with a good AW transmission) was removed immediately the damage would be minimalized.

Sometimes a person's daily route will be easier on a car than others. The heft of one's foot also contributes.

The weak solder joints of earlier instrument clusters is cited as a problem.

The early bevel gears weren't drainable so servicing required removal and God knows what. A guy posted a "How to" regarding drilling a drain and a fill hole in the old units.

          Good luck shopping

Couldn’t edit my original post from yesterday but do want to add a few more points.

Sometimes the early 2000’s V70 transmission issues can be resolved by getting software updates from a dealer.

Also, do note that not all 2001’s have tranny problems. My Dad had a 2001 V70 totaled at 88k. No tranny problems. A friend just sold his 2001 V70 turbo. About 200k and no tranny issues.

I’d stay from the 2001- 2003 V70’s and XC70’s. 2001’s are the worst of the lot. Gradually improved so by 2004 the tranny problems seemed to be in the past. Newer Volvos seem to have some problems too. So maybe the sweet spot is 2004-2012 or so??

Don’t know what model years Ford had a direct impact on.
