Water damaged 2010 V70 R design V70-XC70

What a tease!
HISTORY: We're retiring a car in our family; a '99 Saab 9-5 SE, so a replacement is needed.

DAY 1: I spied a newer-than-ours V70 at a local auto detailer's lot. I couldn't open the car because the business is leaving at the end of this year and the keys weren't on premises. I left my number.

DAY 6: The owner called to tell me it's a 2010 V70 R design in FWD. I assume it's turbocharged.

To his credit he told me up front it was a flood damaged car from Florida AND that the interior had been adversely effected by the windows being closed up tight. He specifically mentioned the discoloration of the R design's 2 toned leather seats and likely destroyed carpeting.

It has <80K and he's asking ~$8,000 for it.

I won't go near a flooded car let alone one with "advanced pressure cooker mildew treatment" but for a brief moment, I was in love.

On day 2, a rainy day, I returned to peer through the windows of the car and noticed fresh drops of water all over the dashboard and center console. The top of the windshield glass was visible so I concluded a piece of moulding was gone and the water was free to enter the car. Either that or the sunroof was leaking-if it even had one. I hadn't noticed.

Actually, it was then I nixed the car.

I had never heard of an "R design" before. Is there anything notable about them?

Happy New Year Everybody, G&K

I owned a "96 R model, and it was special.

Extra horsepower, special suspension ( I swear tat I could feel the shadow of a telephone pole when I drove over one!), large wheels and tires.

I drove it for 11 years and smiled every time I drove it.

After I played late night hockey, I would come off a highway entrance ramp and it would pull hard from 40 to 140.

When I traded it in when it was 17 years old, the sales manager told me he would auction it, I told him to take it for a ride and give it a good boot. The next time I saw him, he told me that it was a pretty fast car. They advertised it on the web for a few weeks.

When Road & Track tested an 850R wagon, they said that they understood why all the photographers drove R wagons - the only car that could hold their equipment and keep up with the sports cars they tested!

The "R" design, just means badges and an interior upgrade. Nothing special. No speed tricks like the old R's, which came with awd. Kind of like the 'ocean race' versions, dark blue with nice leather.

Pity regarding your SAAB 9-5. I saw a very nice 9-5 wagon just the other day and felt sorry for the owners that they were driving a very nice version and parts are getting real scarce.

2007 was the last year for real R's (300 hp, lowered, 4C adjustable suspension, big brakes) "R design" is cosmetics.
Old R's are dirt cheap bc many are beaten, leather bad, and some larger ticket scary repair items. If great repair history, and clean VIDA codes then snap up an 06 or 07 for $5-$6000 (!)
