2002 V70 Turbo Wagon - Doesn't Start V70-XC70 2007

Hi all. My wife's 07 V70 turbo wagon (175K miles) has occasionally not started in the mornings (engine cranks strong, but does not start). Many, many years ago, my old '97 850 wagon did the same thing at about the same mileage, and the dealer fixed it by replacing the "steering angle sensor". Could that be the issue? If so, is this something I can fix?

Thanks,

Bernie

P.S.: BTW, yesterday, after not starting, I turned the wheel slightly, and it started right up!

Try replacing the fuel pump relay. You can jumper #15 and #87 in the relay tray and see if it starts. The aftermarket relays are junk-- get a real Volvo one if you need one!

Comments about lousy fuel pump relays V70-XC70 2007

      Hi Herb,

What brand after market fuel pump relay did you find was junk?
I replaced my 850 fuel pump relay and the main fuel relays about a year ago
with KAE/ Kaehler trying to be proactive. The KAE fuel pump relay became very
unreliable at first and turned out to be trash as you mentioned.
I replaced it with a Stribel made in Hungary which I believe is OEM for more $$.
I wonder if you tried the KAE? or another brand.
So far so good with the Stribel, but it doesn't have much time on it to give
it rave reviews. I just know KAE is junk. I'm not sure if the 2007 is the same story or not.

I just looked around Ebay and Amazon to see what they had and I found the
Stribel just under $45 at Ebay and it looks like Beck Arnley rebrands the Stribel
if you can believe the photos, and it was $28.53 New shipped at Ebay.
Ebay is very cozy and certainly has their own company store. I found the search results varied if I looked up the relay for an 850 or a V70- The same relay was
priced slightly different. If you search ebay for: Beck Arnley 203-0182
you will see what looks like the Stribel w0133-1620074STR and the
      OEM Volvo 9534225

I think the fuel pump controller has chopped DC output (probably a square wave)
and when I get time I gotta look at the output on my scope to be certain.
ordinary cheap $10 relay switches (also offered by ebay) will kill the fuel
      pump fast I'll bet.

      Bill

        Hi Bill:

I don't have firsthand experience with the KAE, but that was the one I had heard lots of complaints about (someone had one fail within 400 miles!). There is a good thread at Matthew's Volvo site about rehabilitating the original Volvo one by replacing the two capacitors and some resoldering. There is another thread with discussion of the waveforms produced by the chip and the capacitors.

My Volvo OEM relay failed Monday night-- rainy and dark by the side of the road. I had a spare one from the pick-and-pull which got me back on the road quickly. I think I should make up the #15 to #87 jumper for my glovebox...

        Herb

      Hi Bernie,

Find out if you lost fuel Pressure at the rail when it won't start.
Fuel pumps and relays and controllers can be intermittent before they quit for good.

Check OBD codes, a crank sensor could be going bad.
