Failing CVVT Exhaust Hub... V70-XC70 2007

All,

What are the signs of a failing CVVT exhaust hub, and how hard is it if you have a CAM locking tool?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Replacing the hub is not a lot of fun, and a good locking tool is required. The torque is close to 70lbs!

The problem is the correct positioning required by the hub.

I would wait for an error code before replacing anything like that. Who knows, it may be a CVVT solenoid, much easier to clean/replace.

So to the point of the question.

I've discovered one, maybe two oil leaks upon changing the oil for the first time.

The one for sure is where the dipstick tube goes into the block. I know I caused this when putting the head on the car and I already have the part to fix it.

The second leak which I don't believe is related to the first has oil coming down onto the engine mount that sits under the crank pulley.

I know that when I put the engine back together that I had some play in the exhaust hub, so is this oil a result of the hub getting worse? If I take the plug out of the hub and get oil spilling everywhere, would this be a correct diagnosis?

I would question if the leak is from the hub or the new cam seal. Take the dust cover off the T-belt and get the engine warmed up, then watch for a leak. Leave the cover off the VVT solenoids also, just to make sure they aren't leaking.

Both Matthews and Volvospeed have procedures on how to replace a hub.

          KlausC,

Do you think that oil is coming from the seal of the solenoid???

Here are some pictures. I hope they help.

          Thanks,

          Matt

Pic#1 says no. Pic#3 is the question. That could be oil being thrown up by the timing belt. Get some paper towels and clean up that nice looking oil, then take a short drive and check again.

You may be correct about the hub. Sorry.

              Update:...PHOTOS: Failing CVVT Exhaust Hub... V70-XC70 2007

So my friend Mark and I tore into the car this morning fearing the worst.

To my surprise, upon removing the exhaust hub we immediately noted that the CAM seal was NOT seated correctly! Yea! The new seal was then installed.

Since I had already purchase a new hub, we compared the play of the hub that we just took off to the new one and came to the same conclusion that the play appeared to be the same.

We then carefully put the car back together.

It started right up and ran great and did not throw any codes!

Power washed the oil off of everything and called it a success.

Now onto my 1991 240 which is in need of some loving.

              Matt

Failing CVVT Exhaust Hub... V70-XC70 2007

I replaced the VVT hub (exhaust camshaft gear) on my '01 S40 a few years ago. Have no idea if a 2007 V70 is the same, but I suspect it is a similar repair.

It's a tedious procedure, but not terribly difficult with the right tools and a good reference manual. I got it right the first time.

I was fooled into thinking my problem was a leaking cam seal and did that repair first only to find a week later that oil was still leaking up there.
Did the gear and that fixed the problem.
I think the VVT hubs tend to go (become leaky) around 150,000 miles.
It makes a real mess at the front of the engine and will shorten the timing belt life significantly - which you don't want to happen.

Sounds like the OP may also be having a PCV issue.

Failing CVVT Exhaust Hub... V70-XC70 2007

            Tom,

I bought the car back in February of this year, with 198,xxx miles on it with a blown head due to a water pump failure.

In repairing the car, I noted that the PCV system was "new" or at least was very clean compared to the rest of the engine area.

I plan to keep an eye on the pressure at the oil fill cap to make sure the pressure isn't going in the wrong direction so that when it does start I can jump on the PCV replacement quickly.

When I did have the head apart I took note that the rear CAM hub did have play in it and that the front one did not. I also found while researching about the VVT hubs that when they start to have play in them that they also leak, thus the reason for my post.

When my wife returns from her trip tomorrow I will look to see if I have any oil leaking in there. At least that way I'll then know what I'm up against.

            Matt
