faulty fuel regulator/damper 850

I was in the process of replacing the fuel filter on my '94 850 non-t wagon, and was releasing the fuel pressure from the schrader value at the fuel rail, and the fuel just kept squirting out! The pressure was constant, even tho the ignition was completely off. Does this mean the fuel regulator is faulty? I see that the part is actually called a fuel damper, meaning it reduces the pressure (I think).

Anyone ever have this issue?
thanks

A pressure regulator and a damper are actually two different things that serve two different purposes. A regulator reduces the pressure, lowering it from what the pump pushes out to whatever the engine needs to run correctly. A damper's job is to smooth out the pump pulsations in order to deliver a nice steady fuel supply to the regulator. Usually the order goes pump > check valve > damper > regulator > injectors.

Depending on the capacity of the fuel system between the check valve and the injectors, it could have shot a fair amount of fuel out of the schrader valve before the the pressure peters out.
