Rear shock mount removal vs flats on shock 1/4" or so 850 1995

The flat on the shock rod top is more than 6mm and less than 1/4. Nut is not budging on initial attempt and 1/4" wrench is starting to round off the flats. Interesting is snap on offers 3 sizes, seemingly minor differences. Since my wrench is tiny (no leverage) I was thinking of the A137 if necessary (even to assure I tighten new nut enough) - but since my 1/4" wrench is already rounding stuff, this 1/4 socket might also be too big and round the head. https://store.snapon.com/SearchResults.aspx?q=shock+absorber&IsPartsSearch=0&departmentName=Tool+Catalog

Maybe a special volvo tool? Well this is no big deal , i can put the old shock back in , or forget removal and buy a new top mount for new shock, or use heat (explosion?). I was just wondering what's up with these flats and the size. I measured with a micrometer, the flats and the outer diameter in that area as diameter is also included in the snap on tool spec.
measurements:
.240 flat 6.1 cm
maybe .238

.304 in diameter 7.72mm (.3125 = 5/16)

A 6mm wrench won't fit on the flats and i have a old shock tool that must be that 15/64 size as it won't fit. If i just put the original shock back into the car, i'll have a few years to think about all this.

    Very interesting... I used a 6" adjustable wrench on mine. You might also want to put a little PBBlaster on the flange part of the nut first, just in case.

    When removing the front strut, I had tried using channel lock pliers and found that I was actually compressing the rod from the pressure.

      6 in adjustable and extra flange juicing with Kroil didn't work. It's starting to round the flats even more. Lucky i was able to do the other side. That was good for my ego. I'll probably put old shock back in. New Sachs German shock is actually smaller in diameter than my 1995 Volvo shock (sachs German also). New might equal CHEAP. If I am someday convinced the shock has really gone bad maybe I'll get somebody to zap the top nut with an air wrench - that seems to work in youtube videos. Or I'll find a socket that fits the flats tighter than a 1/4 wrench. Or maybe I'll just buy a new upper mount although I think I'd also have to buy a big washer that I found under the mount when doing the other side.

        Because you are going to trash the old shock anyway, try some vice grips on the top of the rod. Then, using a hammer, tap the crescent wrench to break the nut loose?

          No rush 850 1995

          Just 3 bolts and it's back in or out. I dove into REAR SHOCK 2, as I did the other side so I figured do both sides while it's still fresh in my mind. I'll just get it back on the ground so I can start on the front strut. Maybe I'll stumble on a better solution or win an ideal e-bay tool for 99 cents by procrastinating.

            I had a shock tool I bought 30 years ago for my FORD. It was too small but I hammered it on the end. Nut removal was possible. Now I can't find the tool, i was going to try to see what brand/size it is as I am still curious if the volvo is a weird size like 6.1 mm. I'm guessing the tool i have was one of those 15/64th.
