Where can I get a replacement latch for the glove box? 850 1996

Hello All,

I hope someone has an answer to this question, I suspect it is not a novel one. The glove box latch on my 1996 850 GLT wagon suddenly broke. When you pull up on the release lever, the glove box door no longer opens. The glove box lock comprises of two parts: the latch (PN # 6818224) and the hook (PN # 6818223).

The hook is still available from Volvo and costs about $7.00. The latch, which is the part that failed, is no longer available. I checked a couple of after market Volvo part vendors, including Swedish Car Parts and although most had the hook, they did not have the latch.

Can anyone recommend to me where I could find a replacement latch for the glove box? Thank you to all who respond.

Hugh

If you can't find one locally, Erievovo will have some. There a a lot of helpful posts for replacing the latch, just google 850 glove box latch.

There are some "home" made repairs for the latch which might apply, and are really cheap.

Klaus,

Erie didn’t have one, and the representative explained that 850s are becoming rare now. Makes sense, it has been over 20 years since the first 850 was sold in the U.S.

As I mentioned above I have been in contact with a gentlemen who sells replacement latches for the glove box that are made out of metal versus the original plastic. I have placed an order for a replacement latch, but it is not expected to be received until the end of this month. If this latch proves successful, I will post all the contact information on this site so others will have a solution to this annoying problem.

Klaus thank you for sharing you knowledge.

Regardless Volvo is pretty good about having parts vs other marques 850 1995

My latch broke 3 years ago on an 850 that had just 110K miles on it. I couldn't see the sense of getting a used one that probably came of a car with double the miles. So I just took the glove box door off and took out the light bulb. So glove box but no door. The two pluses are: I'll never be denied access to the glove box again. 2: Nobody will break into my 850 hoping there is something hidden in the glove box. Downside is stuff does fall out to the floor and it makes the whole car look like a PO Junk. Honestly parts available is so much better that what I see from Audi I just feel so lucky that I bought Volvo. I'm not sure if this luck will extend into the future though or if it even extends to new Volvos. New Volvos seem too complex to have good parts availability when they will be 20 or more years old.

My hope is when I receive the metal vs. original plastic latch, this problem will be fixed for ever. I also think you observation of future availability of replacement parts for current Volvos is accurate. My wife has a 2016 XC90 T8 Inscription Hybrid Plug-In. It is a beautiful car, and we have been very happy with it so far. But when I look around the cabin (which to me is like a cathedral) I cringe when I think that someday I might have to replace a bulb or a piece of trim. I don’t think I would have a clue how to actually take the interior apart to replace or service something.

I am hoping someone will do a DIY video on how to replace the interior airfilter.

Thank you for your reply.

Hugh

I found some super strong small Velcro strips at Wally World and placed a couple on the top of the glove box door. That worked for me since I rarely go into my glovebox. If necessary the door can still be opened.

I still have the glovebox door somewhere 850 1995

I was going to do the velcro thing but put it off until i was sure it wouldn't effect the air bag. I also though that there was hope that volvo might get around to making a run of these parts. No idea if that is silly or not, maybe the euro cars don't even use the same parts as they might have different airbags and dash structures.
Having the box open during a crash might be just as bad too. Actually - it's rare that somebody is in the pass seat.

When I receive the metal latch mechanism and if it works out, I will post all the contact information of this source so others will have a ready to this annoying problem. Right now I am driving around with a spare copy of the registration and insurance card in case I get stopped by police.

I'd try a local junkyard first. If no luck, then do an internet search of junkyards. A part that small can be shipped for a minimal cost.

Did you try FCPeuro.com and IPDUSA.com?

JWalker,

Yes I did try those sources iPd, FCP, and Eeuroparts. Right now I am in contact with a gentle who makes a metal latch replacement versus the original plastic design. If I receive the metal latch and I have a successful experience, I will provide the contact information for all to use. This unfortunately is. recurrent problem for 850 owners.

Hugh
