Mechanic replaced '02 V70 steering rack - now car won't idle right ... V70-XC70 2002

Hello BB forum. 'Just had my son's 2002 V70 (235K miles) wagon's steering rack replaced, and the mechanic informed me the car won't idle properly now (bummer!). He doesn't think 'its anything he did', but I noticed the clock on the instrument panel was reset (he probably left the ignition ON - he did admit he had to charge the battery, but didn't disconnect terminals). Question: may a dead battery be the root cause for this poor idling? Does the car require multiple starts to reset the ECM?

Thanks.

Bernie

A low battery can affect the computers. Jump starting the engine with a very low battery will not charge the battery enough to get the computers to act right. Have them charge the battery, trickle charge, until the battery is at 12.5V.

The clock being reset to 12:00 is a good sign that they left the key in posI, so that they could move the steering wheel. 6-8 hours of that and the battery will be too low to start the engine, and an attempted start will just get the battery below 9V.

There are other things to cause stumbling at idle, but you won't know until the battery is correct.

Hi Klaus. The mechanic did indicate that they charged the battery correctly - in fact the car starts right up - with plenty of "umpf". Maybe I need to re-phrase my question: is there anything a non-Volvo mechanic must do to reset the ECM's? Or will I need to take the car to a Volvo dealer to get this looked at?

      Thanks.

The car might need a computer reset, do a soft boot , its in your your owner manual.

Hi Gerard. Doing a "soft-boot" sounds easy enough ... except I don't have the owners manual ...:) What is the procedure?

          Thanks.

Disconnect battery, leave it 10 minutes to
Dissipate charge, turn sign switch to pos 2and connect battery.

You might want to Google it in case I committed something, you can also find the manual online, volvo.com or something like that. I got my manual from the junkyard.

Hello Gerard. I checked the online Volvo operators manual (per link from Klaus), and there is no mention of a soft reset procedure anywhere. Since I don't want my mechanic to be 'chasing a rabbit down the wrong hole', can you please provide a link (or snap-shot) of what you are referring to?

              'Kindly appreciated ...

              Bernie
