P/S Pump 11 Bar vs 12 Bar S80 2005

My wife's 2005 S80 has a rather noisy P/S pump. The tag on the pump says it's rated at 12 bar. All I could find at the Pick-n-Pull yards are 11 bar pumps so I grabbed one. Would it be OK to swap out the 12 with an 11? I suspect that either pump supplies more than enough pressure under normal circumstances but are there any P/S experts in the house that can offer opinions?

I'd try it, can't be as difficult as swapping the rack out.

"...I'd try it, can't be as difficult as swapping the rack out...."

That's kind of the way I looked at it. Heck, the hardest part of the swap is pulling back the belt tensioner. I plan to do a system flush with CHF-202 at the same time - 12 years/175K on the same fluid is probably enough.

I did a little poking around on the internet this morning. I seems that the S80's and XC90's use the 12 bar while the S60's, and V70's use the 11 bar. Maybe the weight of the car and/or the width of the tires determined what pump they used??

      Thanks for the input.

159psi to 174psi. That is the maximum pressure for the pumps, meaning the steering is turned to 'lock'. And the 15 psi difference during the slow speed turns should result in about 5 pounds of more effort.

Because of the weight and width of the tires, it will be harder to turn the steering wheel especially at very low speeds like parking.

The lower Bar value will work, but you will have to get used to the additional effort. "Tossing" the car around twisting roads will no longer be fun, but driving on normal roads will be just fine.

I would suggest you keep searching for a 12 Bar pump. If you don't find the 11 Bar pump unfriendly, the rack seals will probably last longer with the reduced pressure.

I'm thinking the first thing I'll do is flush the system with the existing pump in place just to see what happens. 12 years and 175,000 miles might be about time, ya think? Although the pump noise sounds kinda "metallic", I know hammering hydraulics can be pretty darn noisy themselves.

This car has always displayed a bit of a "rumble" when turning the steering wheel with the engine idling and the car stationary - but not so much on wet slippery surfaces. The 11 bar pump may make this worse but then again maybe something was always wrong with the original 12 bar pump. Also, we purchased the car with 72,000 miles on it so I can't guarantee what type of fluid may be in it.

          Thanks.
