Notes on PCV replacement
Symptoms, oil consumption, weeping near flame trap area, oily spark plug tip (cylinder #1). Robert on uTube's glove over oil fill hole while running would inflate a little (careful of hot motor). A little rough running. No dipstick blown out, rear main seal problem, or anything very dramatic.
I was unaware that the system has a regular interval for replacement. (60K?)
The FCP video is very instructive. NA non turbo a little easier, -less steps. Upon removal two hoses were completely either broken or disconnected – the thin hard line under the manifold broken from heat, and the rubber elbow at the end of manifold not connected at all. Not any gunk in the block since synthetic for years and synth doesn't really caramelize. Good time to clean throttle body intake and MAF sensor, and all oily messes. I did not remove dipstick tube as in FCP video. Small handle ratchet, and extensions, as in video absolutely essential, since the manifold mount underneath is hard to reach and is the only difficult part of the job. Curve handle ratchet not essential.
I had been intimidated by the job years ago about removing the manifold and the many step process, but the job in not a big deal and took me an afternoon. Careful reassembly of flame trap area (no flame trap installed) Torqued manifold bolts, checked other bolts and leaks all OK. Drove a few hundred miles, no noticeable oil consumption, plug no longer oily, glove test passed.
