Volvo V70 Transmission Trouble V70-XC70 2004

Yesterday I had a sudden transmission issue with my 2004 Volvo wagon. I was at a red light and when the light changed, I pressed the gas and the car would not move. Not an extremely clear recollection of that moment, but seemed to feel a "thud" and car would not go into Drive or Reverse and made a grinding sound when I put it in Park. I'm definitely not very knowledgeable about auto repairs, but my brother advised me that possibly linkage dropped out. Got it towed to mechanic today.
If transmission replacement is required, wondering if we should seek used transmission. Would love for it to last several more years, but how much money should I spend to repair a used car we paid $5000 for that currently has aporox. 185,000 miles??? Anyone had experience with similar problems with this model?

    Update on my Volvo V70.
Not a transmission issue after all. The right axle assembly had to be replaced. We paid $230 for this repair and are so relieved that the problem was not more serious (and more expensive).
Glad to get this vehicle back up and running!

Did you check the transmission fluid level?

A new transmission is cost prohibitive, especially for a car of that age/miles.

A used transmission is always questionable. Even with a warranty they aren't going to reimburse you for the labor to install it and then pull it back out again.

I don't know where you're located, but here's a CL example of a replacement car of that vintage in my neck of the woods:

    And that's with heated seats!

Make sure it didn't just snap a CV joint or something simple like that.

Thanks Chris! I'll definitely keep your advice in mind regarding transmission replacement. Still hoping for a "best case scenario" with a simpler fix resolving the problem. Local mechanic says it'll be Monday before he starts working on it...We'll see then.
We bought this Volvo here in Alabama in 2013 for $5000 from original owner. Appreciate your link to this model on CL. Mine also has heated seats. Sounds like I still have reason to hope for several more years ahead with this Volvo.

Keep your fingers crossed and be sure to post back with the whatever the outcome turns out to be. Your experience may help someone else that finds themselves in the same situation some time in the future.
