2003 V40 - P016 $I3 (P0016) B Crank Position Timing Over retarded Bank 1 S40-V40

I couldn't find anything on the web as to what to look for to solve this error code. Suggestions? Engine has over 230,000 miles. New plugs, wires, ignition modules. Timing Belt changed by Volvo Shop twice per the maintenance schedule.

Have the VVT solenoids been swapped out yet? If you don't use straight synthetic motor oil, they will get gummed up and stop working. Some dealers 'cheat' and use a 'mixed' oil which tends to gum things up, same for quick oil change franchises.

You could do an engine flush, buy it at NAPA. Drain the oil, warm engine, fill with the flush product, run for 10-15 minutes, and let it sit for a half hour, drain the crud and refill with synthetic and a new filter.

Did this start soon after the timing belt change?

I have replaced one VVT Solenoid. Are there two? I've always used pure Mobile 1 or Valvoline Synthetic oil. The problems started long after the last timing belt change - so I don't think there was a connection. I only mentioned it so that it should be ruled out. I will do the engine flush this weekend. I didn't know about an oil flush - but now that I do, it will be done.

Do you have the 4 or 5 cyl? The solenoid(s) correspond to the number of VVT hubs, I had assumed that the 5 cyl has one on the exhaust and one on the intake.

If you replaced the crank position sensor recently, it could be a worn VVT hub. That will require difficult surgery to replace. You could check that first by rotating the engine by hand to the timing marks on the cams, and then rotating it backwards and see if the hub loosens. A real pain when it is cold.

This is the 4cyl, 1.9 turbo, with VVT on the intake and exhaust.
I have at times had this code, seems to show with cold temps and short trips, so I attribute it to water or sludge in the oil gumming up the VVT solenoids. Seems to clear up after a long trip and warmer weather.

I did an oil flush and after a few days I noticed that the light would come on for 2-3 minutes and then go away. I then did a second flush one week later and the light does not come on. I will change the oil again this weekend - to ensure that all of the flush is gone - but the error code has been eliminated. Thanks for the suggestion to flush the oil system. I had always run synthetic oil - but after 240K miles - I guess it needed a little cleaning.
