Just how screwed am I...( all opinions welcome, thanks!) V70-XC70 2000

I live in Dallas where it does not normally get cold very fast or very deep...except for this weekend. My wife drives a 2000 V70 (no turbo) station wagon. Not the crossover models that come later, literally the 2000 V70 wagon.

She did not "winterize" the car and failed to tell me that I needed to.

The car was parked facing into the storm when it started to hit the Dallas area late Saturday afternoon. We went from 65F to an overnight low of around 16F with sub-zero windchill. Sunday was sunny but only reached 30F and again an overnight low in the mid teens with a subzero windchill.

The car was never started during this entire period.

She went out this morning to go to work and this is what happened: keys in ignition, turn car over...plenty of battery power, car runs for 2-3 seconds and stalls. The Low Coolant light comes on (that seems odd) and at this point I get involved. I know my way around cars. I look for freeze plugs, none found, water under the car from something broken and we have slowly melting ice coming out still nothing...I try to start the car, it turns over just like it wants to start but barely catches and then dies. I do that a few times then stop deciding that prayer would be more appropriate.

Then I remembered the wonderful people who run Brickboard so here I am. What do you guys think? I am listening to any and all suggestions. Thanks!

I just wanted to thank you guys for replying. Lucky me, it turns out that the issue isn't coolant or water pump/radiator leakage at all, it is a known RECALL
issue for the fuel pump on 2001-2004 V70 & XC70 models...which is great because replacing the fuel pump even my my hyper-honest shop is $1,600! Whew! I have never been so happy to have a broken car as this!

Thanks again for your replies and advice.

Shouldn't be toooo bad. Wind chill doesn't count!!!! But you obviously didn't have much antifreeze in the coolant lines or block. My initial suspicion, the lower radiator hose froze solid and burst, or part of the plastic radiator did the same, or both!

You have to find the source of the leak, and stop cranking the engine. You don't want to break the water pump.

After waiting for the ambient temperature to remain over 32F, get a gallon of coolant Zerex G-05 Formula or Volvo, and mix that with a gallon of distilled water and fill the system back up. After you repair the leaks.

It is unclear to me what you are reporting when you state "water under car"....

However, Do you have antifreeze in the cooling system (I hope) and what negative Temp is it good to ??? lower than the temps you experienced??

If so ... and that would be the good news, then I suspect you have a frozen gas line (starts and stops ).

Try to get the car into a warmer place... garage?? and carefully warm the fuel lines..... If you get the car running, add fresh fuel and dry gas to get rid of the moisture
    in your gas tank...

    Good luck

Frozen gas lines are very rare these days unless Texas does not use any ethanol as their anti-knock additive (possible but unlikely there is not at least 1-3%).

You would almost have to be running straight water (bad idea ever) in the cooling system for 16 to be a significant risk. 15 F positive is like a 10:1 mix (water:coolant).
