Reading codes on '99 s80 S80

The Check Engine light has come up on my mom's '99 S80.

Assuming I can find a parts store that has a scan tool, what is the procedure?

Engine OFF
key to RUN (but not started)
Scan tool PLUGGED IN
Read codes?

I've checked the gas cap and it is properly attached and sealing surfaces appear clean and undamaged.

Car has 75k miles; she is original/only owner. She hasn't driven for a year or so; I drive the car when I do her shopping every week so it gets driven, but not much.

I gassed up the car and took it on a 200 mile trip to give it some exercise. I noticed the CEL after about 30 min. Drive ability is fine - no issues.

Car has been well-maintained by local indie shop,

Any thoughts appreciated. If I can save her the expense of a shop visit to resolve a simple issue it would be helpful.

    Well, I was able to download the codes.

    P1171 and P1181.

    Cleared the codes, drove home (~30 freeway miles). CEL is still off.

    The codes appear to decode as follows:
    >Here are the definitions: (fuel trim = fuel mixture adjustment)
    >P1171 ECM-261A Long-term fuel trim, Upper limit
    >P1181 ECM-271A Long-term fuel trim, bank 2 Upper limit

    Any thoughts about whether these codes deserve more immediate attention, or should I just drive normally and take action if/when they recur?

      Nice try. You can't get a P1181 on a Volvo.

        I'm not sure I understand what you are suggesting.

        The scan tool showed two codes -- P1171 and P1181.

        I can upload a pic I took of the scan tool if it will help.

        Code lists like the one I quoted do show both codes.

        If there is another site that you might suggest that would have more active discussions of S80 issues, it would be helpful.

        The RWD part of this board has been marvelous for helping me with issues pertaining to my '82 245 wagon. But this is my first foray into the AWD side.
