When did Volvo start making airbags standard equipment on all models? 850 1996

Hello All,

In a separate query, I mentioned that I am in the market for a used Volvo. I don’t know when Volvo made airbags standard equipment on all its cars. I think it started in the early ‘90s. For instance on the 240, Volvo made the airbag standard equipment in the last year of production: 1993. However, it was a single airbag for the driver only. I am interested in limiting my search to the years Volvo made dual front airbags standard equipment.

Thanks to all who reply.

Hugh

The first year Volvo put an airbag in the 240 was 1990. Drivers side only. Side airbags were first placed on the 1995 850's and were the first car in the world to have side air bags.

Bradford,

Thank you for your reply. Thanks to you, and the other members of this website, I am becoming “educated”.

I have a '92 245 in my driveway with an air bag.

Volvo often put new features in top models and there were overlaps in equipment.

Our '88 745 GLE had a 240 engine.

I'll bet that that the two door models had special features before they reached general production.

1990

I owned a 90 244DL for many years. As with all 240's it came with a single air bag. So I guess that eliminates them. I think all the 740's also had just a single air bag. Not sure, but I think the later 1994?+ 940's might have had dual air bags. The later years of the 940 also came with same side impact system as our beloved 850's. With the RWD cars you might be limited to just the 960's and S90/V90 models to obtain dual airbags... Check the 700/900 FAQ to confirm my thoughts.
