Timing belt S60 2003

Hello all

Is there anyway to determine if the timing belt has been changed/ or is any good in the absence of books or stickers

I have had a look at it spinning and it looks brand new

Moves a little in and out
Does this indicate tensioner issues or stretched belt or is normal

The car has done 93000 miles

Thanks in advance

David

Considering dealer charges to replace a timing belt ($750++), I would guess it is original. The belt moving side to side could be a roller whose bearings are worn.

Your best bet is to swap the belt/tensioner/and both rollers.

    Check the serpentine belt also.

When I bought a 2002 S40 with only 24k miles last fall I was very concerned about the TB. I removed part of the cover and found it to be in excellent shape so went right ahead and drove it home the 40 miles or so. While the mileage was incredibly low the age had me VERY concerned. My worries were somewhat relieved on reading the owners manual - scheduled TB change at 168 MONTHS!!! Of course I will change the belt soon but 14 years is quite a long time. I assume the original belt is not your average rubber piece needing changing at 5-7 year intervals. My advice--don't panic but do schedule the service at the earliest convenient time--and use Volvo parts. -- Dave

Your car is also 13 years old.

Time and mileage are reasons to change the belt. Look in your maintenance manual. If you do not have one, I think that you can download one from Volvo.

Fear of ruining your engine is another one.

A decent mechanic will check the entire belt route as he changes the belt.
