850 cold start questions 850 1994

All,

So I've been noticing a change in the cold starts of my 1994 NA 850 sedan. This has been going on for a little over a week now.

Around the 12th of May, when I went outside to leave for the day and start the 850 for the first time that morning, I noticed that it is taking longer to crank before the engine catches and fires. The whole time I've owned the car (since last Sept.), it would usually start after just 2 seconds of cranking. However, since the 12th, when I crank it from a cold start, it will take, on average, about 6 to 7 seconds of cranking before the engine catches. It'll just go crank-crank-crank before I hear the motor fire. Warm starts, after the engine is shut off at operating temperatures, are still fine.

This morning, I cranked it for about 6 seconds and it didn't catch. I waited about 15 seconds, then cranked it again for 2 seconds before it fired up. The battery is fine b/c I replaced it immediately after I bought the car last Sept. All electrical accessories work. Is it the cold start valve, fuel pump, pump relay, what?

There is no cold start valve. During your cold start cranking, take a look at your tail pipe and see if there is a puff of black smoke at engine start. That is an indication of over-rich, which might be a bad fuel pressure regulator.

Another way to check the fuel pressure regulator is to pull off the vacuum line at the TB and check for gasoline. The vacuum line runs from the tree to the passenger side of the intake manifold, next to injector #1.

When you put the key in position II, listen for the fuel pump running for a few seconds. Move the key to off and back to position II, wait until the fuel pump stops, then try to start. If it starts easily, then the back flow valve is at fault.

Keeping it running is better than buying new
