re: 2002 S80 AWD - DIM, PDM & SWM issues S80 2002

Hi All,

My friend's S80 is having an instrument light panel malfunction. A Volvo dealer came up with a list of things to fix. He reached out to me since it will cost him a fortune. I would love to help him and I need your help. He's most concerned with DIM/instrument panel. I am doing it for free, of course! So please help us. :)

Now, I watched the DIM video by XeModex. It looks easy to me. Did I miss something??? It's a plug and play, correct?

How about PDM & SWM? How hard to replace it & does it require a programming?

PDM
DIM
SWM

As always, thank you.

    update I S80 2002

    Hi All,

I was able to remove it without a problem. It wasn't too difficult. I don't know why the dealer quoted him for $1400, that was just for removal & installation for DIM.

For repair and return service, you don't need to obtain the codes. Lucky us. I didn't have to put it all back and read codes.

On his 2002 S80, there are two screws that holds the cluster frame. You need to remove it first.

     photo 20160321_175638_zpseb2mxt2r.jpg
It's really tight in there. The left side had less room.

In order to remove the DIM, tilt it forward like so & pull out toward you.

I put a tiny magnet for insurance.

My friend and I would like to thank you all!!! His broken DIM is on its way to Canada.

      update I S80 2002

Did Xemodex move? They had opened a center in NJ a few years ago.

Where did you find those torx tools? I have been looking in all of the wrong places.

Nice move with the button magnet!!

        Hi Klaus,

Yes, they are located in Canada. I did even know they had a center in NJ.

I will ask my friend where he got it. He had to borrow from one of his friend. I have found something similar on Amazon.com. Little pricey.

Read the following post and tell your buddy that it's fixed! Unless the doors don't lock and the highbeams won't flash:

The DIM is a problem and Xemodex will repair it permanently. The dealer price is nuts, and just shoves the problem down the road for a few years.

      Hi Klaus,

Wow, what would I do without you guys!!!

I forgot to mention about his engine. It's 6 cylinder with turbo. Oh, yeah...

Q1. His driver side window is not working. Is this something I can fix or do I need to replace the module? He told me he never spilled anything.

Q2. Is this correct steps for the DIM replacement?
Step 1. Park the car, move the steering wheel out of the way. Remove the key.
Step 2. Remove the top trim around the dash.
Step 3. Remove the instrument cover
      Step 4. Remove Torx screws
Step 5. Take out the DIM partially & unplug the wire
Step 6. Send the DIM for repair & wait for a replacement unit? (This is where I am not sure. Am I sending the unit for repair?)

As always, thank you & thank you!!!

        re: 2002 S80 AWD - DIM, PDM & SWM issues S80 2002

EDIT: Once you unplug the DIM, the key must not go back in the ignition until you have plugged in the DIM again. The car is not driveable. You may want to disconnect the ground on the battery for 10 minutes prior to unplugging the DIM, just to be safe.

The Xemodex video is perfect. Rub your Torx driver tip on a magnet to permanently magnetize it. CLEAN the top of the steering wheel cover before you put it back.

For $350, you ship the DIM to Xemodex, they repair it and send it back to you. I would expect 2-3 days turn around. They use next day shipment.

For $550, they send you a replacement DIM and you send them your old one. And they then give you $100 for the core. This is for no down time.

If the window doesn't work, a Volvo scanner or PC based scanner will be needed to determine what is wrong. It could be a bad wire at the door jamb???? A loose wire at the window motor??

A 2002 S80 with a T6? And it still runs? They aren't worth a lot in my neighborhood. Especially when dealers don't repair, they just throw new parts at it and charge accordingly.

          Hi Klaus,

Yes, it's still running strong. I thought the GM transmission would blow up by now. I warned him few years ago.

During the DIM replacement with battery disconnected, I will check for a loose connection at the window motor. I will report back.

          As always, thank you.

Xemodex is the way to go here as Klaus says.
I`d recommend talking to someone at Xemodex before sending the unit off to them. Cindy was my contact person. Also make sure you disconnect battery in proper order which sounds elementary but apparently, wasn`t to my local indie shop. When they re-installed the CEM, I had to take the car to the dealer to get the SRS re-set which was another $86 (cheaper than I thought it would be!). We had the DIM replaced on our `03 XC70 years ago, saved a bundle & Xemodex offers good service too.
