A video to show how to replace the rear brakes? V70-XC70 1999

Hello All,

I have to replace the front and rear brakes on my 1999 XC. I know how to replace the front pads and rotors, because they are identical to the brakes on my two 1996 850 wagons. However the rear brakes have a different set up. Is anyone aware of a good on line video I can look at that will show me how to remove and replace the rear pads and rotors on my 1999 XC wagon? Thanks to all who reply.

Hugh

I don't know of any 1998-2000 XC70 videos. Yes, the calipers are weird, but not rocket science to understand. The 2 slide pins still need to come off, cleaned and re-greased. The pads are unique, they have little spring things on the back edge.

What I have done is first, release the tension on the ebrake cable by opening up the trap door under the center armrest and spinning the tensioner clockwise.

Always remember, the rear wheels can be turned going forward only. Moving the rear wheel rearward will lock it up. And hang the caliper from the springs and not the flexible brake line.

"Bob is the car guy" uses silicone paste as a grease agent. It is high temp and water resistant. You can also use a dab of paste where the hub and rotor touch, and where the wheel and rotor contact each other. If you cannot find the paste, get a small tube of silicone brake grease.

Be careful removing the rear rotor. The brake shoes can create a groove in the rotor making it difficult to get off eventhough the rotor is loose.

Klaus,

Thank you. I once saw my mechanic removed the rear pads, and what I recall and can still see were two opposing nuts on opposite sides of the caliper. They were both attached to the sliding pin. If I recall correctly, you turn the nuts in opposite directions to loosen the sliding pin.

I’m sure I’ll figure it out. As you said it isn’t “Rocket Science”. I just don’t want to screw things up, or turn a simply repair into a nightmare. I’ll follow your advice.

Separately, my beautiful “new” 2002 S60 T5 that I filled this website up with so many questions, was “killed” on 12/22/15. My bride was driving it and she has a lead foot. She went to pass a car in front of her that she thought had pulled off to the side. As she was passing it, it suddenly turned left hitting her on the front passenger side fender. She veered into a telephone pole and blew both air bags. The impact was so strong that she pulled the front driver’s side wheel off the car. Thankfully, she was unscathed. The Volvo did what it was supposed to do, and confirmed why we buy these cars. I only had the car for just over 2 months and never had the chance to take it out on the highway. She said if I ever find another pristine T5 I can buy it no questions asked. That car fell into my life, and I hope another one does too.

Again thank you for your advice on the rear brakes of my XC. I’m sure I’ll be successful, I just have to take my time.

Hugh
