PO 2187 thrown today V50

It is cold with a 18F temp and wind chill of 5F.

Went shopping with my wife and I noticed that the car was running a bit odd - rough at first. After about the third store, started the car, exited parking space and saw a CEL. Car wasn't showing any signs of rough running or anything that might worry me so we made two more stops and headed home.

Scan tool shows a PO 2187. I cleared the code and it didn't come back.

I haven't checked to see if the gas cap or oil cap are tight. If it is a PCV issue, I won't do the job, too cold and from what I read it is not a cheap job. As I have said on other occasions I am not a fan of the engineering on some Volvo PCV systems. To me it is over engineered. If 99% of the cars can run with the little valve going into the valve cover why did Volvo feel the need to create a nightmarish system of hoses and traps.

Oh well enough of complaining.

Is there anything else to look for?

Running too lean is a vacuum leak, most cases. Your PCV system does have a poor designed upper hose, upgraded since 2008. But look around for other breaks in the vacuum system.

The PCV valve of the 1970's is long gone. It is the function of the oil separator to condense oil vapors and let the liquid oil drip back into the sump. This method keeps most of the oil in the car rather than burning a quart of oil every other tankful and fouling the spark plugs.

I remember the 240's, wasn't the oil trap under the intake manifold???

Oh good I was hoping for your response. :)

A vac leak can be a real PITA to find. I can use the spray method but that doesn't always work.

I went and removed the gas cap and re-installed it. I usually put gas in the car but my wife got gas last. I said something to my wife about tightening the gas cap and she said she doesn't like to tighten it too much because it gets too hard to remove.

Unscrewed the oil cap and re-installed it.

Anyhow I then took the car out for a drive and no codes. Had the scan tool attached and no pending codes. There was one spark mark, I cleared that and drove for 18 miles on the highway and residential roads....no problems.

We got the V50 at the end of September 2015 and I am not very familiar under the hood. When we bought it the engine bay was clean enough to eat off of and it wasn't from steam cleaning.

Yesterday morning the car did seem to be idling higher than normal and that would be an indication of a vac leak. It was not there at the first start this morning, my wife went on her 30 mile commute and no code.

There is so much that is hidden that I can't just look at the different vac hoses to check them.

So the 2007 V50 doesn't have the situation that you must remove the intake manifold to replace the hoses. If so --- I consider it a good thing.

Negatory. The oil separator box is under the intake manifold. There is a lot of work involved in that cramped compartment.

I suspect that the code will come back in another 100 miles or so. Keep erasing it until spring....

Nothing to do with the gas cap. Your wife is in the clear, so long as she hears a click when tightening the cap.

It has everything to do with unmetered air entering the intake manifold. It could even be a dirty MAF.

It took 3 weeks and @ 800 miles but the cel came on yesterday. Oil change last Sunday, barley drove this week and the first day driving the cel comes on. Coincidence.....maybe. I did notice at morning first start it was idling higher than normal.

Vac line leaks? I can see only a few lines on this car. If it warms up I might get my MAF cleaner and clean it.

          Thanks

Heck I am so new to that air box that sits there and associated piping that I'm not even sure how easy it is to get the MAF off and spray some MAF cleaner on it.

What I do know for sure is that it didn't got out of the 20's yesterday and the wind was blowing.

As long as the PCV system isn't clogged creating back pressure I am fine with clearing the code once in a while.

On my 25 mile drive the other night I never could get the car run ready for emissions inspection. It was down to two remaining lights to go out. Maybe those lights needed a longer cycle than 25 miles to go out.
