Used buying: New-gen S60 / old S60 / C30 S60

I want a Volvo again! We're shopping for a used one, narrowed down to a late-mode C30, S60 2.5T (2012-13) and S60 2.5T (2008-09). (No AWD, no 6-cyl, no R-type.)

We've already test-driven examples. I have a trusted mechanic to check out anything before purchase, and does good work on Volvos. And any of these cars would meet our needs. Per the folks at Intellichoice & Edmunds, expenses on keeping the C30 or new-gen S60 for 5-8 years would be close enough to not factor into my decision. (Naturally if I go for the older S60 I am prepared for more money and work.)

So, is there any big difference in repair and maintenance trouble points between the three?

(I've read about premium v. regular gas in all the other threads on the subject.)

Thanks in advance.

First, my take on gasoline. Yes, use 91 octane IF you have a high pressure turbo and tend to use the turbo a lot and high rpms. 87 octane is fine for the rest of us, unless it is very hot and lots of long up hill drives. 89 octane usually has more cleaners in the gasoline and will keep the valves and intake cleaner.

For the S60, newer is always better. I would have a newer high mileage car than an older low mileage car. These engines were meant to be driven and not just to the grocery store and back or once a week to the church. Low mileage coupled with regular engine oil equals sludge and PCV problems. AND, most dealers do not use synthetic oil, it is too expensive for them.

Check the Carfax closely and examine the car for body work. Many dealers, not just Volvo, will buy a car from auction that has a dented door/fender and have it repaired and that will not show up on Carfax.

C30s are no longer made, and parts are going to be difficult.

      First, thanks.

Gas: I'm already thinking 89 or 91, simply because of owners' manuals.

      Now, though, I'm a bit confused on what is / isn't a high-pressure turbo.

      High pressure--that includes the older-gen T5 (2.4L 250+ hp), right?

      But which of these are low-pressure: The previous gen S60's 2.5T (2.5L 208hp)? The C30 T5 (2011 & up) T5 (2.5L 220+ hp)? The current gen S60's T5 (2.5L 250hp)?

Oil: I'm already looking for a car that's been fed synthetic, so good to hear it's worth my while. Seen too many PCV horror stories here.

The 2.5T is low pressure. The T5 is high pressure. After 2014, all bets are off as Volvo is changing the badging. Some of the 4 cylinder engines will have a supercharger and a turbo.
