Spring clip fasteners are driving me nuts

I thought I would fix my EVAP code before it gets too cold. Sure enough, the small hose next to the fuel filter is dry rotted with a gaping hole. But, both ends of the old hose are held in place with those nasty small spring clips. You know, they have 1 tab on one side and 2 on the other. The theory is that you pull the single tab towards the double tab to release tension and slide the clip out of the way. Sure.

What I have is both tabs point to the top of the car, not where I can reach them. Of course, Murphy! I don't want to break anything, and these vacuum lines have been together for 25 years.

HOW do I get the old, cracked line off? I tried to surround the line with my pliers and squeeze the tabs, but then I can't move the clip.

Stupid spring clips!!

It is supposed to get cold tomorrow, help!

Spring clip fasteners are driving me nuts - not this time

I managed to turn the vacuum line so that the spring clip releases were facing me. I removed the forward clamp and pried off the vacuum line from the plastic nipple.

Then I could twist the line with one hand and release the rear clip. I had to slice off the old rubber vacuum line from the hard plastic line, carefully so as not to damage the plastic.

I used a 1/4" fuel line to replace the cracked vacuum line. Silicone is my friend here as the vacuum line is larger than the 1/4" and a little persuasion (lots of twisting and encouraging words) got at least 3/4" of the hard line inside of the fuel line. No clamp needed.

The forward end of the fuel line fits perfectly on the plastic nipple and that was again clamped with the larger spring clip.

That should end my P0440/3-1-5 error code. Who cares if it is rains tomorrow and gets colder!

All I need to find now is my upteen oil leaks.

It's fun having a project car.
