Get a new MAF? 850

Hi, I got stuck today with hard start and no start, drained the battery. I cleaned the MAF with alcohol, and seems fine now. At the mech now having bat charged. Should I clean the whole intake like mad and hope for the best, or replace the MAF that has 247K on it? THANKS!!

If you can use an ohm meter you can see if the MAF is really the problem. Google the ohm readings for the MAF. Another problem that causes hard starts this time of year on 20 year old volvos is the coil....the plastic that covers the windings falls off and the windings deteriorate........since you had a KN filter though, it was most certainly the MAF. KN=junk as far as reliability. They say their product doesn't cause problems, but with all the MAF failures I think they are just selling a defective product.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a try and suspect the coil is getting long in the tooth. I disagree about K&N, mine has been great.

Cleaning accumulated crud is usually a good idea.

It's possible the MAF is going bad. But intermittent problems are a tough call.
My first one lasted around 210,000 miles. The new replacement was bad, so was the second new replacement.

Yes, it is an expensive part to just throw at the car and cross your fingers.

The mechanic said just keep running this one. I'll clean the K&N and throttle body and all the tubes.
Another thing he found was low cranking amps on the starter, but also not to worry (?)
Now if I could just find that dash rattle...
      Thanks!!

I would get rid of the K&N and go back to 'paper' filter. If you use too much oil with the K&N, that will easily contaminate the MAF sensor, and not enough oil means that the filter is passing through too much dirt.

A regular filter is $9-12 and will last a few years so long as you don't follow trucks down dirt roads.

I LOVE my K&N, have had it for years, and don't use too much oil. It was the first thing I got for the car in '01. MAF had super thin film of dry soot. K&N last cleaned... oh, due for a cleaning :)

I guess it kind of depends on who, when and where the car is used.
At the time mine was my daughter's daily driver. I did not want to risk any "it should be ok"s with her.

The MAF is not a cheap device, nor is it going to last forever. Cleaning it with alcohol was a good thing if your car now runs on demand. Any error codes?

Cleaning the intake like mad? Well, at least make sure the air filter is clean and positioned properly. In most cases, dusting out the top of the airbox would be nice.

It would be nice to have a clean throttle body, but that is way down stream from the MAF.
