sway bar/control arm wear 93 850 850

I just checked my drivers side suspension, because I was having a weird vibration when I turn to the right (going slow). I first assumed it was the new tires having much more tread.

but then when I look at the parts, I notice that the sway bar (from IPD) seems to be rubbing up against the control arm on the drivers side.

Anyone have any idea why? There isn't much play in the sway bar, I previous replaced the end links, tie rods and others (cept not the control arm) and put in the sway bar about a year+ ago.

I'm not that worried about the worn spot (in the sense that I think I can put off replacing it, since it seems to only be a small notch and not getting any bigger).

But i just wonder if something is aligned wrong (I had it aligned too).

I talked to someone @ IPD and I think that it means my control arm bushings are toast.

So I moved the end links to the rear hole, and the vibration seems to be gone.

Eventually (probably this weekend) I'll order new control arms and replace them. Haven't decided if I want to keep the end links in their new position (Back hole) or go back to the first one (front hole).

Can you notice slop in the ball joint/control arm when the the wheel is off the ground and you grab the wheel at 3 and 9 O'Clock and try to move it.

Replacement control arms are an adventure of their own, and there's a lot of junk suspension parts around.... You might be opening a new can of worms.

You might spray paint that scuff mark on the control arm and see what happens with the links in the rear hole. I'll do that here.

Maybe others can check their control arms and see if the problem is unique to us.

      Bill

I was wondering if that was something I could do, or if that would potentially cause structural issues.

I don't know what you mean? What structural issues?

The only thing for sure is that the bar is hitting the control arm.
(I wonder if we are the only ones?)
Probably the remedy is to trim off the ends of the bar and use the rear holes.
Dunno if it's hardened or not. If it's not hard then it should be a simple fix with a sawzall.

Take a photo of the control arm showing where it touches, there should be a shiney spot similar to B.B.'s control arm. If you can't post the photo on Brickpics, then send me a copy.

There is no way that the control arm should move that far.

Remember, the 1993 is different... I think that the bushings are replaceable on some models. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-suspension-control-arm-bushing-850-c70-s70-v70-271631oe

Perfect! Just a little big. I hope you sent a copy to IPD.

Let us know when you get the bushings replaced and move the links back to the first hole.

            Someone at IPD saw it.

Would it be advisable to replace JUST the bushings on the control arm(s), with that notch taken out of the LHS control arm?

I would just replace the bushings. The control arm itself is suspect in cheaper materials when you buy non-OEM parts. The bushings are OEM. BTW, at $44 per wheel, you might want to consider both sides of the car.

That 'notch' isn't much bigger than a dent from a large rock. I wouldn't let that worry me.

Time to go to a pawn shop and see if they have a cheap GoPro. Tape it to the control arm or sway bar and see what happens in a parking lot!

At least take a picture of the sway bar/control arm with the wheel removed and the wheel turned all the way to the left. Send that picture to IPD, I am sure that they will find it interesting.

That happened here on the passengers side.
I called IPD and they "Never heard of it".

I wonder if that's the story you got? They asked if there was slop in the bushings.

I have some pictures of the shiny spot on the top of the R control arm where the
sway bar was rubbing, if you're interested.

Did you install the HD IPD links?
Perhaps the problem is the sway bar links vary in length?

There's something sour with the geometry for sure.

    Bill

      Hi Bill,

Did you ever email these photos to anyone at IPD? We sell a **lot** of our anti-sway bars along with our heavy duty endlinks and I have not heard about an issue like this until now.

You can send them into me at Dylan@ipdusa.com. The same goes for the original poster!

Yeah, I have the HD IPD links.

It's like it's off by about 1/8th-1/4th inch. Something just isn't lined up right.

I even rotated the endlinks so the stiffer ball joint was at the sway bar, and it didn't make a difference (the ones at the sway bar were looser than the upper end link ball joint).

What did you do to fix it?

I'm almost tempted to grind it down on the control arm (tho I fear that will ruin it).

I wonder if the HD end links are a longer than the ordinary ones?

What about the upper mount point for the link? Is that on the strut? I forget.
        Maybe the variance is there?

I moved the end links to the inner mount hole of the sway bar, and I'm not sure
if it's fixed or not. The problem never had obvious symptoms here, I just noticed the wear mark on the top of the control arm from the sway bar that shouldn't be there.

Maybe the sway bar is made wrong? Everything looks fine in the driveway.

        Bill

I might try that. I don't remember what the other hole does to the suspension.

Should be easy to see if it's still hitting it, just turn the wheel to whatever side it would normally hit the control arm.

Kind of annoying that this is happening, doesn't make a lot of sense. I really only noticed it once I got new tires too (just like 2 weeks ago).
