small alternator wire 850 1997

The small alternator wire on my '97 850 T5 broke at the connection. I put on a new connection, but now the wire is about a half inch to short. Can use 14 gauge wire to make a splice? If I can't what size wire do I need to get?

Thanks

OK, as long as the spliced-in piece is of a gauge AT LEAST as heavy as the original wire, so that it doesn't cause an increase in line resistance.

Also of importance is the method by which you make the splice. Crimp type splices are commonly used, but I prefer a linesman splice, soldered, with shrink tubing insulation.

Oh yeah, don't forget to slide the shrink tubing onto the wire BEFORE you twist the wires together. I never forget that step.... ;0

Thanks Chris - that's what I thought but I want to make sure that I was doing the correct thing.
