Help.. Electronic Throttle system ALL 99

On my 99 xc, the ETS light comes on after about 10-15 minutes of driving. My dealer tells me that the code is not resetable and the they need to replace the control module at a cost of almost $800. I don't trust these clowns - From previous experiences.

Does anyone have any experience or problems with their electronic throttle system. Could it be mechanical. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks

Re: Help.. Electronic Throttle system ALL 99

Sorry but your dealer is 100% correct as we replace many of those too. Volvo took a system that was flawless and never failed, the cable operated throttle base and replaced it with an electrical POS that fails often, most while still under warranty but I'm sure the new part is no better than the original.

Apparently you're car has more than 70K miles on it already (emissions warranty for that part)?

There's nothing else that will fix the part other than replacing it. The common code(s) are almost always stating "internal failure, permanent fault".

BTW, don't blame the dealer guys, they're just trying to help you keep your car running. Volvo designed and created your car so put the blame where it's deserved.

Re: Help.. Electronic Throttle system ALL 99

Ditto what herb said with 1 possible exception. Certain faults are corectable via software download. Others require replacement of the ETM. There is a tech net note available to the dealer via the vadis system which is very specific on which codes can be corected by download and which require module replacement. And yes, most dealers have a handfull of incompetent techs. They also have experienced, caring techs who take pride in their work. If you don't trust your dealer, check with another one for a second opinion. Find out what fault codes are stored in the ECM/ETM and repost.

Re: Help.. Electronic Throttle system ALL 99

Wow, another true-ism indeed!

If software doesn't cure the problem (assuming the code doesn't indicate "internal failure, permanent fault" for example), then yes, after replacing the electronic throttle unit new software must be installed by Volvos Vadis cart or the car won't run.

BTW, I too luv older cars for myself :)
