2002 XC70 cluster swap? V70-XC70

Greetings-
I recently found a 2002 Volvo XC70 that was well maintained but had a few small issues that made the original owners move on (flickering cluster, broken spring and a faulty coil pack). I like these cars and am ready to move up from my 1998 XC70.

Fluids changed, tune up completed, codes cleared and the front suspension was replaced. Everything was going well until I sent the cluster out for a rebuild. I just got an email that it is unrepairable as two of the pins were too far gone.

Now I am at a loss - can I put a use cluster into this vehicle? I really have no interest in a $2000 dealer repair - I am looking to do this myself. What do I need to look for? What d I need to look out for? I would appreciate any guidance.

Thanks!
Mike

If you didn't record the code numbers off of the back of the cluster, then you need to get your hands on it. Once in hand, contact a good volvo salvage yard like Erie Volvo or Southern Vo-vo and they'll tell you what info they need to match one up to your vehicle. I know it's possible - I had to do it on my V70. You just have to hope the wrecking yard has one with a matching code number, year, etc. Don't let anyone tell you that you can stick any 2002 cluster in your car. Without matching the codes, the odds are against you making it work.

I hope they send back the cluster soon. You may be able to find a cluster in a junk yard, but it should be the same year/model. A 2001 or 2003 might work, but I can't say for sure.

There might be reprogramming involved, might not. Some years were forgiving about that. Of course, there is the problem of odometer reading. If programming is involved (dealer) then it might be possible to reset the miles.
