V70 no-start V70-XC70 2000

2000 V70 SE 215K miles, Denso, AW 55-50SN

This No-Start condition has happened about three times in past year; the last time was this morning. A couple of taps on the starter solenoid with the plastic handle of a heavy screwdriver fixed the condition and the car started right up. Battery is fully charged; all lights, warning lights and instruments function normally when ignition is switched on; it just wouldn't engage the starter.

After the second no-start occurrence six months ago, I cleaned and tightened all of the ground connections I could find.

Today's incident seems more related to the condition of the solenoid, where a heavy tap freed up whatever stuck electrical contacts are inside.

Can the solenoid be replaced independent of the starter and would that be advised? Starter is functioning normally. Note the relatively high mileage of this car.

That's not a lot of miles. But, 15 years of starter engagement and It is time for a new starter. There are shops that can repair the starter solenoid, but it is probably best just to find a 'new' starter. I would look at a P&P first.

I love when people say 215K is not a lot of miles.
      My 99V70 has 285K.
I just bought on Ebay an 04 V70 with 205K and expect to put at least another 100K on it.

we now have 3 v70's all of them over 200K

Agreed, 215k miles is a notable achievement but the car should make it to 300k. Perhaps somewhat less likely is the original 5-speed transmission. Regular fluid changes seem to be the key to transmission life.

Also, with synthetic motor oil since first oil change, the PCV system has not been serviced, and with no signs of overpressure.

Latest maintenance: this car had the AC clutch gap symptoms in warm weather and we opted for the shop to reshim the clutch, rather than try the bread clip temporary repair. About 2.5 hours labor and some freon; didn't have to buy any parts. AC worked very well yesterday in 95-105 degree ambient temps.
