Caution: Repairing Shifter Can Lead to Broken Windshield V70-XC70 2003

I decided to dig into the shifter to see if I could fix the park lock solenoid. One part of the disassembly process calls for the shifter knob to be removed by pulling it straight up VERY HARD. So I got myself all wierdly positioned kind of backwards over the shifter so that I could pull up on the knob with both hands. I gave it all I had to get it to release. Well, when it released I elbowed the windshield hard enough to crack it - a nice big spider crack dead center in the W/S! That was Friday night. The next day, $140 and a 30 minute house call had me a new W/S.

On the bright side, cleaning out the solenoid plunger real well with some spray brake cleaner while clicking the brake pedal on-off-on-off seems to have returned the solenoid to proper working order. (I was just praying there wouldn't be any sparks to ignite the brake cleaner in my face.)

Sorry, but I couldn't help myself from laughing!! Is your elbow OK?
You were supposed to open the sunroof to give yourself some clearance, good thing the shifter didn't hit you in the mouth! A dentist would have charged you $140 just to take a look.

Caution: Repairing Shifter Can Lead to Broken Windshield V70-XC70 2003

Here's the wierd part. It was kind of dark in the garage and I was using a drop light to work on the shifter. I got all done with it and went in the house. A little later the wife and I were getting into the car to run errands. She gets in before me and says "Hey, your windshield's broken!" "Huh?" I look at it - sure as s_ _ _. So I start looking at he garage ceiling to see if a piece of acoustical pop corn had fallen off. (We have that problem in the place we're renting.) "Nope, the ceiling's in tact", like that that stuff would have been heavy enough to do any damage anyway. "So how the heck did the windshield crack?" At that point I vaguely remember banging my elbow against it when removing the shift knob. Absolutely no pain in the elbow. Some people say "No brain - no pain." Maybe that's the problem. Anyway, I can't believe how easily that thing cracked when hit from the inside-out.

The new windshield is really nice. Hope it doesn't leak.
